im currently a junior taking:
band, marching/symphonic
ap english
ap enviromental
ap human geography
spanish 4
math analysis

next year i could either take:
band, marching/symphonic
ap english
yearbook or ap psych
ap gov't/econ.
spanish 5
calc or ap statistics

OR i can do duel enrollment through a local college and take only band and calc/ap statistics at my high school and the rest + some other classes at the college....Im planning on majoring in International Relations & Marine Bio. at American U hopefully.
....what would be the best plan for senior year???

other college choices are UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, UCSD, & Eckerd

I would NOT recommend skipping the AP classes offered at your HS in favor of college classes, unless you have a really good reason that you can explain to the colleges [i.e. in your family moved 2 hours away from your HS and you could only take CC classes because you also had to work at part time job- that sort of thing] . Colleges want to see that you took the most rigorous courses offered at the HS you attend, and it would not look good on your transcript that you passed up the opportunity[ in their eyes] to take AP english, AP govnt, Spanish 5, Ap calc, etc . The colleges will see what classes are offered because your CC sends a Profile of your HS along with your transcript.

I would check on the transferability of the college classes to where you want to go for college. The schools you've listed aren't very hard to get into so the AP classes might not be a huge factor. Also, taking classes at college might make good essay material.

I dual enrolled, but took classes that weren't offered at my high school, or ones that didn't have an AP level to them. I've been told that college classes and high school AP classes are seen the same by admissions officers. One benefit though: if the college has an established reputation (a state college, etc.), it can be used to show that you capable of college-level work. My high school has horrendous grade inflation, but my College GPA aligns very closely with my HS, offsetting any doubt.

well i already have been accepted to do the duel enrollment and all...its now just a matter of where i want to go for my senior year/what set of classes to take....around here taking college classes while still in HS is looked at as a really big deal/honor....but im getting the impression that it isnt so much? just wondering what would be the best bet for looking the best i can on college apps...thanks!

I think you need to talk to you HS guidance counselor and get his/her opinion. Have other students who dual enrolled took college courses instead of comparable AP courses that are offered at your HS? If s, how sucessful were thy in getting into te colleges they applied to? Dual enrollment is usually looked upon as a plus IF you took classes at a college that are harder or more advanced than those in HS- in other words, it's for students who have exhausted te course offerings at their HS before their SR year, which doesn't appear to be this case here. Colleges really want to see that you have taken the most rigorous courses available at your HS- other wise it could look like you were trying to slack off your SR year, by avoiding AP courses that are available, and that will not go over well.

my GCs push it...like i said, its a big thing at our school...the classes i would be taking at the college would be basically the same as i would be if i were to stay at my high school....english, (instead of AP at HS...but wouldnt it generally be the same without the AP test), Psych (again...instead of AP psych), Government & Economics (in place of AP Gov't/econ), Calc I (instead of academic calc) and Intermediate Spanish II (supposidly same level as HS spanish 5) so im just wondering why it would look as though im "slacking off" to college admins....i mean...considering its generally the same courses just at a different school....i just assumed that college courses would be better?

i hate to say it...but my GCs arent very usefull in a situation like this...because the more students that duel enroll as a senior, the better our school looks....so all they do is push push push duel enrollment....and really weigh your options and help you to do what would be best for your future in college

Who does the HS look better to because of the large # of dual enrollees? Why do they push the dual enrollment?-is it because of some deficit in the AP classes? In other words, are they AP in name only- very easy classes because the teachers don't teach to AP standards??
If previous students of your claiber who did dual were successful in gaining acceptance at colleges they applied to, then maybe it would be OK. If I were you I would just really want to know why the GC is suggesting students bypass AP classes at your HS.
