For the record, I am supportive of homeschooling. I at times thought about doing it in our home, but also thought for us, it was not the best option. But I know several homeschooled families and they are stellar people.
JB has always said that they believe in nurturing “skills” or a “trade” - from when the kids are very young. That, I agree with. What I don’t agree with is that there doesn’t seem to be encouragement at the appropriate age to go out of the home to learn these skills/trades. There are at least a half a dozen or so of these kids that are old enough for college - surely one of them has wanted to go - maybe one did do community college or maybe that was necessary for the pilot’s license or whatever.
You would have to wonder if the kids WANT to have the opportunity to leave the home or if they FEAR the opportunity.
Note that both of the married couples also live in homes owned by JB. Derrick and Jill are living in a pretty large house that was to be up for sale at some point, but wonder if that will really happen. Jessa and Ben are living in the house that the Duggars previously lived in when they only had a dozen or so kids and which Josh and Anna lived in when they lived in Arkansas. So both girls so far, married guys almost hand picked by JB and live in homes owned/“assigned” to them by JB.
I’m confused: So was it over the clothes, or sometimes under the clothes? There is some mushy talk around this issue.
One of the things that I have been impressed by is how they have insisted the kids (mostly the boys, unfortunately) learn the trades. They do seem to be pretty handy. But why not teach the girls some of the trade stuff, too, instead of all homemaking skills, and perhaps teach some of the boys some of the homemaking skills?
But they do start the kids fairly young, teaching them manual trades.
The church I grew up insisted that women should stay at home and take care of the kids. Period. Around 9th grade, that teaching motivated me to excel in school and aim for a career in engineering!
Abasket, I believe the small home was originally owned by Grandma.
The girls do know how to do some things like change tires and maybe oil, whatever.
And I agree, may homeschool kids are really making the most of it, exploring, trying challenging courses, pursuing some interests in depth and breadth, etc. Many do sports or ECs through a local hs or rec league, interact with diverse groups, and do plenty of public service or comm svc, may have jobs. They are “out there” for more than family travel or a visit to a conservative-view museum or site. They can be pretty impressive.
They are talking about the parent company of the publication that released the police report and other publications they own that objectify women. Like they would know that how?
Yea, I know… for parents that shelter their kids from almost anything secular, they sure seem to know a lot about ‘tabloid’ media.
And they are sharing statistics of how many families have similar issues (they said 2/3) and the other sister used the word slander when talking about the leaking of the report. And to specify having licensed counseling. These are their own words? Don’t think so.
Yes - they clearly have “talking points”. Very rehearsed.
But, I find Jill and Jessa more sympathetic than their parents - and this should be a very happy time in their lives - I do feel sorry for them.
Agreed. They are more genuine. And sympathetic. As was discussed earlier they are re-victimized by the parts of this that are happening to them out of their control. But they should have used their own voice a bit more, IMO.
Going back a few posts re none of the Duggar offspring leaving home to go to college - I did come across this:
Curious and had to look it up:
Erin Bates grad’d from there.
Watching one of their pastors argue with Dr Ablow on Hannity. Pounding my head on floor as he tries to tell Dr Ablow that how they live their lives is none of the Dr’s business. Irony meter explodes. Seriously? And these are the people who want to DICTATE how LGBT people should live by freaking force if necessary? Seriously?
I am surprised Dr. Phil hasn’t scheduled an intervention.
How long has “discipling” been a verb?
Looks like he might have been trying to do so!
Seewald explained: “…I can speak out and I can say this and set the record straight here. Like in Josh’s case, he was a boy, a young boy in puberty and a little too curious about girls. And that got him into some trouble. And he made some bad choices, but really the extent of it was mild, inappropriate touching, on fully clothed victims, most of it while girls were sleeping”
She’s speaking of herself in the third person – this isn’t just a talking point, it is a really bad talking point. Whoever did their interview prep did a terrible job.
So I guess sticking a finger under the underpants of your little sister isn’t so bad because she’s wearing clothing. Because that is mild, inappropriate touching. Same for sticking your hand under the dress of a victim in the laundry room who was (presumably) not sleeping.
Good thing he was only a little too curious about girls.
So my questions are… How do they know that this only happened the times he confessed and how do they know that he was telling the truth that each time it only lasted a few seconds? I find it hard to believe it really was only few times and in each case it only lasted a few seconds…Plus they say they supposedly put up safe guards for the girls but yet he was able to do it again at least twice? Also the media is repeating that it was always over the clothes and that not what the police report said.
