Duke 2014 Hopefuls!

Anyone else deferred from early decision waiting to hope to get in RD?
Realistically, it is probably no go, but it is hard to give up hope.

10% chance is what they told us back in December.

do you guys think doing ED raises your chances at RD?

I doubt it… ED means you will definitely go, so they will admit you if you are qualified because they know it is absolutely your first choice. So if you don’t get in, your chances are lower IMO. If it was EA, that would be a different story.

I got deferred early decision as well. I’m not attending if i get in anyways (the expense is just way to high) and am attending the U of Minnesota. But i believe that deferrals are probably ranked in a certain order, and the high end get in.

D got wait listed at MIT yesterday. :frowning: It is painful. She can’t decide on her second choice. I think Duke would be the one, I am not sure. Of course she applied for engineering. The schools that she got in so far and it is considering are : WASHU and Vanderbilt.
She needs to send a deposit until May 1st for her 2nd choice in case she does not get off the wait list at MIT. I advise all of you to always have 2 or 3 schools that you would love to attend in case your first choice does not work out. I advised my D about that, but she says : shut up Mom :). Oh well. How stressful is this process…Good luck to all.

I was worried about the ED deferred acceptance rate til we saw the number of applicants. Mathematically, it’ll be almost the same acceptance rate I believe. What that means for our chances is entirely up to the applicant pool.

On one hand, you have people that didn’t need to apply ED for Duke, and are the tippy tip top, the crazy people who are a shoo-in for Ivies and will undoubtedly get in to Duke as a second (or less) choice.
On the other hand, you have people that don’t really think they can get in, but just applied because of the ease of the Common App. These people wouldn’t have wasted an ED on Duke either.

So we’ll see soon how it all plays out :O

And, of course, Moxess, you also have the students like my son, who was in no way ready to make a commitment to ANY school last fall, regardless of his abilities or attitude. He simply did not have enough information yet to tie himself to an ED.

My issue here is that ED is now perceived as the “real” application period for competitive students, when it just seems way too soon for a lot of kids.

A year ago today Cornell was my top choice, … as it turns out, it didn’t even make my top ten list, I never even applied … there is so much to consider, so much to learn about … I think ED is just a bad idea …

Another deferred applicant here.
Moxess- Don’t forget the extremely qualified students who weren’t ready to make any financial commitments.

yea i agree with plumazul. Currently, my number one choice would be Dartmouth. i havent even thought about applying to Dartmouth until around halfway through December. The only reason why I did apply was because I felt like i should apply to another school and schools like Brown and Yale had way too many supplement essays. I clicked on Dartmouth and the only supplement was a peer evaluation so i was like, “nice no extra work for me” and so I applied haha. It was about 5th on my list of schools and between December to now it has risen all the way to first. this would have never happened if I applied somewhere ED. Oh and by the way since I am on the Duke board, Duke is a close second and this might change depending how much I enjoy the LSRW/Blue Devil Days.

Only about 9 days away!

( : Hoping for an acceptance, obviously haha

By the way - anyone following NCAA? Duke is the #1 seed! I want to camp out in K-Ville!!

When are acceptances and how do we get them? Mail, email, etc…?
Sorry if this was answered somewhere else.

yeaaa blue devils. i’m really worried they’ll lose again to a lower seed which always happens…

You’ll two e-mails a couple of days before the decision date, one with your PIN and the other with your password. You’ll get an e-mail before THOSE that will let you know you’ll be receiving those aforementioned e-mails, along with the date that decisions will be released.

I’m really surprised that neither Duke nor Rice have sent likely letters this year (at least to my knowledge). It makes the wait that much longer.

^ do you mean OTHER than the various P-frosh events?

oh sorry I meant non-URM likely letters.

^^^
I agree. It seems different from what I read that Duke has done in the past.

Based on postings I have read here, likelies appear to have gone to highly qualified hispanic/latinos and African Americans. I did not see any other minority mentioned in postings–i.e Asian, Native American, etc. If this is incorrect, please say so.

My D is of mixed heritage and received likelies from 2 ivies and one top 20 school but nothing from Duke. It seems that to them she is perhaps not viewed as an URM. She has good stats too that put her in the top quartile.

So she waits and prays for an admission letter.

Good luck to everyone as you await the decisions. It seems like there is a great group of students who have applied (and been accepted) to Duke here on this thread.

I got into UCLA for bioengineering, do I have a chance of getting into Duke BME? My grades are almost straight A’s, 4.2 something… but 1 B+ in 2nd semester junior year for AP eng, and 2 B’s last semester for AP bio and AP calc…ACT 33, math 790, chem 740, us history 710. i have strong extracurriculars, and my duke interview went really well (i showed i was very ecletic in my interests). UGH the wait is killing me! Good luck to everyone
