Duke 2015 ED applicants

Pratt or Trinity?

Pratt looks at scores a little more heavily than Trinity which would be detrimental for you.

trinity…

Hey everyone! I am applying ED also and I am stressing out a ton :frowning:
There are only 10 more days left and they are going to be horrible.
Has anyone heard if we would hear earlier?

@LImaxduke

If you’re applying to Trinity, your SAT IIs are definitely going to hurt you. Not only are they subpar (sorry to say), but neither of them are in the humanities (ie lit, us history, or a world language, etc.).

We should be getting an email soon!

I would say that you would have a very good chance if the subjective categories you mentioned are that good (as in merit a 4-5 on Duke’s numerical admissions system thing).

As in they won’t just discard your app after they see your scores. The scores will probabaly be seen as slight-medium negatives that can be regained in other areas.

Just to keep in mind, Duke looks at 6 components: ECs, recommendations, essays, test scores, course rigor, and grades. By the looks of your stats, you have the first half, but not the second.

I’m not trying to put you down. Just be realistic.

@4everyoung, Trinity is not a strictly humanities school, though. All of the non-engineering sciences majors are there (math, physics, chem, bio…).

^^ It actually looks like he/she has everything down except test scores (5/6 categories) and the scores are not so low as to take him/her out of the running completely (imo).

That is true, but regardless, a 690 and 730 will hurt. I can’t say how ECs will factor in since they were not listed.

Hey, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Okay I’m still freaking out. I honestly didn’t know it was this soon. I thought it would be the 15th. Is a 32 a good score on the ACT?? I’m starting to doubt my application even though there is nothing I can do about it now.

Ahhh i need the 15th to come soon! I’m freaking out.

May as well ask for some opinions on my stats very quickly also.

Location: Canada
Ethnicity: Black
SAT: 2160 - 740 CR, 730 M, 690 W
SAT II: Math II 800, Chemistry 730
GPA: 91% (equivalent to a 4.0 according to my counselor, because 85% is an A)
Rank: School doesn’t rank, but likely top 5%
Course Rigor: IB Certificate, I’m in full IB except in English and Social
Great quality and quantity of ECs (some standouts are Air Cadets, Varsity Basketball/Football, and an Acting/Modelling Agency)
Awesome teacher recommendations and counselor recommendation, as well as a well-written essay

What do you guys think?

Maybe some of you didn’t see the title, but this is NOT a chance me thread.

Sorry if that sounded unnecessarily mean. I’m getting really stressed out.

first off i am a guy, second of all: trust me when i say my ECs are very very good and im assuming theyll enjoy and appreciate my essays and that my letters of rec are solid (very good)… i know the SATIIs arent the strongest, but in the overall 6-component scheme, its just one… (and btw @4everyoung, is graduating with 12 AP classes with 4s and 5s on all so far not a strong enough course rigor?)

@LImaxduke

Everything is relative. There are people with the same courses as you with better AP scores and SAT (I and II) scores. I repeat: everything is relative. And a question for you, how am I suppose to judge your “very very good” ECs?

Yeah guys lets just stop with the chancing, its way too late for that now! The real decision is almost here so lets just focus on that.

How many of you guys already have terrible senioritis like I do?

Okay I’m still freaking out. I honestly didn’t know it was this soon. I thought it would be the 15th. I’m starting to doubt my application even though there is nothing I can do about it now. One of the main things about getting in is “looking unique compared to the other applicants” and being able to “stand out” to the admission officers. They mentioned that most everyone has the grades and the scores to get in.

I do a little bit, but I guess I’m so concentrated on the decision and stuff that I’m scared to drop my grades in case Duke is watching haha

@4everyoung

well im not going to go into detail because frankly no one wants to read that much, i was just sayin assume ECs to be much higher than the average: “i volunteered at a soup kitchen for 2 hours once in my life”…for instance ill give you one of mine:
i individually started teaching children with special needs how to play the piano, every sunday for the past four years i have spent 2.5-3 hours teaching 4-5 kids for half hour sessions…you see what i mean now kinda?..what do u mean relative

Relative means 12 AP classes with 4s and 5s looks good now but not so much in comparison to all 5s.

I’m not getting into a “who has better stats” contest. It’s stupid.
