Duke 2016 Official Transfer Thread

@Division1to100 The link began working for me

@Division1to100 Yeah, hopefully my extracurricular actives, essays, and letter of recs get the attention of the admission officers.

The fact your on the D1 tennis team and are looking to play is awesome! Have you contacted the tennis coaches at Duke? Your ACT score, AP test scores, and college GPA are something they will definitely be looking at

@prohudson16 Thank you. I have a bunch of NCAA regulations I have to get through, but I will deal with them soon enough.

@Division1to100 Yeah I would do whatever you can to talk to the coaches as soon as possible. They can definitely have some pull in the admissions decisions. My really good friend’s grandfather was a professor at Duke for 30+ years, and asked to see if he could get me talking to a faculty member or even use some of his pull with admissions, but unfortunately, he didn’t feel comfortable with the idea.

@Division1to100 Hopefully that helps! If I didn’t have to have my multiple knee surgeries, I would be trying to walk onto the varsity soccer team or the kicking squad for the football team.

@prohudson16 well good luck to you. And to everyone else best of luck as well.

@Division1to100 On Duke’s website for us to view our application status, do we have to complete all of the four to do items on the financial aid section or just the FAFSA and the CSS? On Duke’s checklist & deadlines page on their website, It shows that the FAFSA and CSS are due April 1st

I’m trying to transfer to Duke from Wake Forest. I have what I believe are good reasons for wanting to transfer but I wonder how they’ll feel about my going to what’s a pretty similar school in some ways (competitive private, North Carolina, even in the same athletic conference, etc).

@Sam998 I completely understand. Feel free to post your stats

@Bored1997 What year are you in at your current institution?

@prohudson16 I am currently a freshman by year and sophomore by credits.

@prohudson16 3.5 WFU GPA, much lower high school GPA but with a significant upward trend (significant meaning 2.0 my first two years of HS and 3.5 the last two)
790 Reading 620 Math 700 Writing,
5’s on AP Lang, Stat, and Micro, 4 on Lit, 2 on Chem (oh well)
state title in debate, awesome essays, awesome recs, mom went there for grad school so might count as a legacy, not sure… It’s a reach but I think I’ve got a shot if they look at things holistically.

@Sam998 Yeah I completely agree. Because Duke’s transfer admissions process is holistic, it is at least worth trying. To be honest though, Wake Forest is a fantastic university. I have already been accepted to Elon, so it’s either Duke or Elon for me.

@Bored1997 Nice. I’m technically a junior with 77 credits by the end of this semester, but I applied to transfer as a sophomore. Duke is known to not be very generous with transfer credits

Just got my grades back for the second quarter, did not do as well as I thought. Maintained the same GPA as last quarter, 3.85 again.
How should I send these grades? Send the transcript again?

@Bored1997 Yes, you will want to send the transcript if they do not have them.

Thanks @prohudson16

@Bored1997 I had a question about the ACT. I am going to retake the ACT in April to try increasing my composite or my science section score. I see that you got a 33, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on ACT books to study from.

@prohudson16 I used to just check out books from my library and time myself on the practice tests, so there is only one book I remember the ACT test prep book made by the ACT organizers themselves.
