Hi everyone Can’t seem to find a RD discussion thread for Duke so thought I’d go ahead and make one. How is everyone’s application process going? What are you all most excited about when it comes to the possibility of attending Duke?
I have finished my app, essays and ready to submit. I had considered whether or not to apply ED to Duke–it is a top choice for me. Anyway, RD it is. Wish everyone else good luck.
@ConcertoinD Congrats! I submitted mine recently as well. Did you write the optional essay?
submitted mine a few days ago, waiting for an interview invite and (of course) for decisions!
I am going to finish my app soon. Good luck everyone! These essay-writing is time consuming. :((
I submitted my regular decision app two months ago, but I’m still really nervous. I just got a call today from an alumni and I have an interview scheduled for next Friday. Wish me luck!
Submitted my application a few days ago and waiting to get contacted by an interviewer. Duke is my absolute dream school, unfortunately I couldn’t apply ED because of the hefty 70k price tag my parent’s could have been forced to pay
Does anyone know the acceptance rates for Pratt vs. Trinity? I want to go into Computer Science, which is offered in both.
@itsmyusername Of course both are very hard to get into, but I’m pretty sure that Trinity has a lower acceptance rate. I did the calculations based on Duke’s Class of 2017 School Profile and around 9% of applicants to Trinity got in RD whereas around 13% of applicants to Pratt got in.
@allthingstesla Oh, thanks! I didn’t know they published that info! I looked it up and Class of 2018 was an even 10% for both RD and 2019 was 10% Trinity and 9% Pratt…so I guess it’s anyone’s guess, lol.
@itsmyusername No problem! Sorry, I hadn’t looked at the most recent class profiles. I agree–the numbers seem to fluctuate so it’s probably around the same in the end.
I have taken 3 subject tests. Do I need to send all 3 or I can choose to send only two?
if you send your SAT scores or any subject test scores, you must send everything from Collegeboard.
Thank you @mdbluedevil
Do u guys know how helpful it is to submit my application by the December 20th deadline?
My duke essay and parts of my common app could use some work, and would be slightly better if I submit my application by the normal deadline.
Is this worth giving up the chance to have an interview?
If I submit just the common app and not the supplement before the 20th will I get the interview or do I have to submit everything?
did all of you guys submit an optional essay?
@rolliepollie6834 i submitted the optional one.
have any of you who have already applied been contacted for an interview? submitted app a few weeks ago and still haven’t heard. i’m sure they are super busy rn having just come out of ED decisions, so maybe we will here in january?
Hi all! My name is Jarrett and I’m applying to Duke University RD after being deferred from Penn ED. The main reason I’m interested in Duke is their unique Ethics institute and fantastic major options for what I want to do. If I were to attend Duke, I would likely major in The Study of Ethics or Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. I’m not a particularly good interviewer, and I haven’t even started my supplements for it, so I probably won’t apply until close to the RD deadline, which means I won’t be having an interview.
Also, is the optional supplement really optional? Does it hurt if I don’t do it? Most colleges who have optional supplements say it is optional, but really in reality they recommend it. Is it the same with Duke?
Also, does Duke use score choice? I just want to clarify since someone had the last page had some doubt.
Good luck to all of you.
@jarrett211 Hi! I have not heard explicitly from anyone associated with Duke whether or not they really recommend the optional supplement, but I would encourage you to write it if you have some time. Think of it as one more opportunity to show admissions something about yourself. Though the wording makes it seem like the supplement may have to be about a specific identity you associate with, I would interpret it as anything that makes you different and has given you an experience that has influenced your sense of self in some significant way. For instance, I wrote about a pretty ordinary life experience that impacted me in a sig. way rather than writing specifically on my cultural, religious, or gender identity. If you don’t feel you need another area to write about yourself, then don’t worry about it. But if there is something you you may want to expand on or add to your app, then I would use the optional supplement to do that.
Regarding scores–Duke is not score choice. So you have to send them either all your ACTs or all your SATs!
All the best to you as well
