Ok, so I figure perhaps we could all start getting to know eachother a bit more, and actually help Duke prospies in the process. What do you think sets you apart from the applicants you were set up against? Scores? Extracurricular passion?

For me, it was definitely my love of reading. I'm insane, and I always have a book on my nightstand. A few years ago I was into Russian lit (War and Peace, Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina) then I dabbled in Brit. Lit (Vanity Fair, Austen), then French Lit. (Red and the Black, Les Liasons Dangeruses) and now I'm reading contemporary American fiction (The Corrections).

I won three consecutive state championships in Varsity Tennis the past three years; the only three in my school's 60 year history.

my interview was on the phone because the alumnus could not make it to my home. we spent almost two hours discussing Dreiser, naturalism, and conscription. other than that, essay #1 was pretty good.

any obvious hooks?

I think I got in when I did by virtue of...being from South Dakota.

well....i'm a nasd licensed stockbroker

I thorougly enjoy early 90's nickelodeon shows (Pete and Pete, Rugrats pre-Dil, Ghostwriter, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Hey Dude... etc. etc.)

Rugrats is amazing!! And so is Dreiser. American Tragedy was depressing.

I'm a dedicated wrestler and an aspiring physicist/biologist

oh, and I'm very into pretty things
:D

i really have no idea

<- the smartest and the most good looking person in the world

no wonder im going to duke

ghee, i still don't know how the hell i got accepted, practically everyone was telling me Duke was a crapshot, statwise. guess i proved them wrong:P
well my stats were what some people on cc would call disastrous (2080, most people on the roster had above 2200), at least for duke. i think what did it for me was the convincing Duke essay, the outstanding peer rec and most likely the international background.
bulgarians aren't that big on duke since it's in the south and duke doesn't get that much attention from intels in general,at least compared to HYPS. so being a freigner set me apart form domestic applicants, having UScitizenship made me an easier bite to swallow than other internationals. that's the more cynical explanation parents made up:P

I'm chinese and I played football?

i'm indian and i broke my leg after making varsity tennis

also a 2330 SAT, nat'l merit and a published research study in a prestigious oncology journal helped.

but the tennis thing took the cake.

not sure. i consider myself way lucky to have gotten in. if i had to venture a guess, i'd say it's my passion for debating that really helped. i was pretty active in our youth in government club. any fellow CONA attendees?

I was invited to go to CONA, but I'll be in California at the time.

State award-winning journalist, I interviewed two Heisman winners and Ben Roethlisberger all in one day

Hmmm. Valedictorian in Full IB. I love aviation and hope to get my license. I had an internship at UBS financial services and I've done two study abroad programs so I'm nearly fluent in Spanish.

I can't wait to meet all of you. This is so surreal.

...It certainly wasn't my test scores haha. But my transcript grades and classes were pretty good.

Otherwise, I've learned personality can take you a long way.
First generation here too.
