Duke and likely letters

ammarsfound, I got mine just by regular mail in a standard 8.5 x 11 envelope.

Hey, would you all please be a little more specific about what you are receiving? Are you getting a letter? A packet? What specifically does it say?
Are you talking about a likely letter, or this recent invite in which they fly you to the Duke campus or something different?
Congrats to you all. I haven't gotten any word, and I'm just curious.
Thanks.

Ahh, I got the letter from Duke! So excited! How many of you are planning to go to Duke Up Close?

Powderpuff, the letter came in a regular envelope, it was only two sheets and basically it just said that the Duke Admissions committee had reviewed apps, and that 350 or so applicants had been picked out. They said that as long as the applicants maintain the same academic and personal standards, they would be accepted in April... also they're offering to pay for transportation and accommodations (I guess dorm rooms?) in April for Duke Up Close, an open-house type program.

Today, my parents got a follow up letter from Duke too-- it basically said the same stuff, with some clarifications about financial aid and scholarships. It also clarified the conditions of the likely letter, saying that as long as there's no "significant negative development" that I would get accepted. Sweet!

So so so so so so so so so so excited!

When were these all dated?

I got a second letter from Duke today! It was two sheets and more clear that I'm basically in unless I totally screw up.

Two letters? Haha, they must really really want you. That's awesome.

what was your first letter like? your second one sounds like the one I got

The first letter was one page and dated January 31st. It was sorta vague about the details to Duke Up Close and didn't say flat out I was gonna get admitted.

The one I got today had the recently mentioned "significant negative development" stuffs and was 2 pages long.

Well. I Can't wait to visit now... hehe.. maybe it'll overthrow Brown?

Fengshui, what were your stats? GPA, SAT, etc?

Stats aren't all they look at. They weren't too stellar. I go to a totally mediocre public hs. 1/460ish. 4.0 uw, 4.8X wgpa... 2350 (800M, 790CR, 760W) single sitting soph year, 800Math2, 740 BioM, 750 Lit, 710 Chem...

My ECs and Essays are what got me the invitation though ... definately.

^ Pssh, non-stellar stats my ass.

Eh. I studied my ass off and that's what I managed.

Seriously if my essay weren't about my addiction to lawnmowing I'd have been just another face in the crowd.

I'm similar to fengshui...valedictorian. 13 APs... 2400 + 800*3...but i think essays really tipped the scale

I'm really excited to potentially meet you people at the Duke Up Close whatnot...hope you guys aren't toooo awesome so I get some money though :-x

I just got one today. I'm pretty pumped.

Hmm, everyone is talking about their essays. I didn't even bother with the Why Duke one :p. I wrote a pretty standard common app essay evaluating a significant experience then wrote like 2 paragraphs for the research essay.

I didn't write the Why Duke one either, lol. It was one of the last applications I filled out after a wild, 11-app spree and I just couldn't find the strength. I hope that doesn't hurt me too much.

Yeah, I really took the "totally optional" thing to heart. I wouldn't have said anything especially enlightening anyway, so I don't think it would have helped.

Haha Weasel I did exactly the same thing as you! Like really exactly, no Why Duke and 2 paragraphs for the research :)

I'm thinking my teacher recs were a strong point. The essays were standard, IMO

I'm excited too. And pssh ignore my stats man. Most people think I'm a total ditzy moron.

Which is an absolute BLAST!

Ummm... just a warning, don't count on me doing or saying much of anything normal. I'm really not as awesome as you think. Infact I'm downright terrible; honest to a fault, too flirty and enthusiastic, loud and spontaneous. I'll burst out into song if you don't watch out. Sad thing is that's all true.

You best avoid me :P
