Duke and likely letters

Yeah I got the thing from Brodhead too.

Cool! Hahaa they weren't kidding when they said to expect lots of email and letters.

But I actually haven't gotten any email. Has anybody else since receiving the Duke Up Close letter?

Parent letter last weekend and Brodhead letter yesterday.

bluedevil--my essay was this totally meandering cracked out spiel about how I'm a closet entomologist, and how my secret love for entomology has impacted other parts of my life. Yeah, lol. I was totally insecure about it, but it's good to know that someone liked it haha.

fengshuibundi (and everyone else basically)--I don't recall reading anything about 'Duke Up Close' in the letter...was that the second sheet about the scholarships or something? I haven't gotten any emails about anything either, btw.

And the president's letter thing was pretty sweet, I have to say...

That's pretty cool, koena. There's actually a biology professor here who regularly offers an entomology class.

Hey, just got a letter dated Feb 9, it says that I'm in the top 350 applicants out of 19,000 and that they fully expect to extend formal admission to me in the spring...anyone else get anything like that? That's a legit likerly letter right?

Jake, where do you live?

It's odd that people are still getting letters dated Feb. 9.

Yeah, I thought so too...I live in NJ (but our postal service is notioriously late)

I didn't get one from Brodhead, I got one from the dean of admissions Guttentag....

has anyone in texas received a likely letter?

I received a likely letter yesterday, dated Feb 9. It was also from the dean of admissions...
wow, I was so shocked when I read the letter. I thought it was going to say that they received my stuff; I didn't expect them to have made a decision so quickly.

O, and btw, for everyone else who received a likely letter, why do you think you got it? I am not an amazing athlete, or a prodigy musician, or a 2400 SAT student....I don't know what my hook was.

What were your stats?

I'm just having a hard time believing my letter wasnt a mistake hahha.

haha...yeah I got a 2nd letter, this one from Brodhead, the President...whatever

it'll be fun to meet everyone

They send a 2nd letter?

Yeah....I totally think that this letter was a mistake. In fact, I logged on to CC right afterwards expecting to see a discussion called "Duke sends out likely letters by mistake"
But anyways...my stats:
2/328 weighted, 5/328 unweighted
4.713 weighted, 3.982 unweighted
33 ACT/2180 SAT (although I sent my SAT scores with the January batch of subject tests, so they arrived at Duke after the letter was sent)
I go to a public high school in conjunction with a math/science magnet center. Rejected SCEA from Stanford :-(

Wow yeah, my stats arent stellar, but I have a few interesting things...anyway I just hope it wasnt a mistake...like koena i was deferred yale scea

Can someone help me understand the process there at Duke?

Are the likely letters you're referring to only sent to EA candidates?

I think we got a Duke upclose brochure, but is that something every student gets?

Because our son is the oldest of five, he's completely responsible for the cost of his education, and would only be able to go to Duke if on scholarship. I've only had a chance to scan the posts, but it looks like the odds of that are slim to none. He's something like 4.7 weighted, (one B in AP Spanish Lit), 2370, 35, SAT II's range 770-800, 7 AP classes, lots of EC's. If we haven't heard anything yet, shall we bury this thing in an early, miserable grave? I'm trying to plan spring break visits, and it looks like we scratch this one off the list.

Grateful for your savvy help!
Sara

One more point of confusion. When we talked with Duke admissions they said no additional applications were used for scholarship applications ~ just the application to the school. Now as I am reading backwards, it would seem that thousands applied for the Robertson Scholarship via a specific application. Again begging the question, do we give this one an immediate burrial?
