Duke and likely letters

Are the likely letters you're referring to only sent to ED candidates?
No, RD applicants.

I think we got a Duke upclose brochure, but is that something every student gets?
No!!! That is basically a likely letter. Most admitted applicants are invited to Blue Devil Days, the regular recruitment weekends in April.

If we haven't heard anything yet, shall we bury this thing in an early, miserable grave? I'm trying to plan spring break visits, and it looks like we scratch this one off the list.

No. Your S has a strong application, and an invitation to Duke Up Close is a good sign.

When we talked with Duke admissions they said no additional applications were used for scholarship applications ~ just the application to the school. Now as I am reading backwards, it would seem that thousands applied for the Robertson Scholarship via a specific application. Again begging the question, do we give this one an immediate burrial?
That's true for almost all of Duke's scholarships (AB Duke, BN Duke, University Scholars, etc.), but the Robertson is a bit different. The Robertson committee strongly recommends submitting their supplement by December 1, since only a few applicants will be fowarded to them by Duke or UNC. To be honest, I have known a few to get it without submitting the supplement, but most did submit it.

Like Jake and Koena I was deferred SCEA at Yale. Can't wait to meet everyone at Duke Up Close or scholarship finalist weekends.

Oh, you are a big help, Warbler! I didn't think I'd get a response on a Saturday.

Sooo.... great. I think I threw that brochure away.

I made him apply to a bunch of schools, and the mail is creating chaos in our lives and schedules. I saw there wasn't a lot of merit money out there to be had, and with so many fabulous candidates, I figured he needed to apply to several to be sure of a way to pay for school. Well, all the things started arriving at once, and in the chaos of this home it was a bit difficult to sift through it all.

For example, he just got back from Wake's interviews. 20 invited, 9 will full ride. He got a no yesterday. Sad, but having several other things in the hopper makes it easier to digest. He's going in a couple of weeks to interview for ACU's Presidential and to tour some of those schools. He was invited out to USC for their Presidential, but I don't think we'll even go b/c it's just half tuition. By the time one does the other half plus room and board, it's $100,000 debt (although AP credits could help). So there's no point going to fall in love with something he can't afford to do. Plus, there's a limit to how many days it's wise to keep being gone from school.

Long story short, I got the Duke brochure, and it wasn't an invitation to interview so I figured it was just a gracious offer w/ no possible money, so no point in going. What are your thoughts. There is no possible way he can go if he doesn't scholarship, so do we skip the visit? Help me figure this out!!

We're still waiting to hear from Furman about the Lay Scholarship, and also will wait to hear from Princeton, although he won't qualify for need based scholarships unless they read our plea via letter. (One SN kid has required brain scans in DC, orthomolecular medicine in Chicago, neurodevelopmental treatment in Seattle, and SN private school at $25,000 per year. Also has another sibling in $15,000 private school ~ can you say, "Like squeezing blood out of a turnip?)

GRATEFULLY,
sara

I never got a real brochure for Up Close...I did get to letters (saying that I was in the top 350 of 19000) one addressed to me and one to my parents and a FAQ sheet that described the visit and scholarships...anyone else in the same boat?

Aw, he should've visited when he interviewed at Wake. It only takes ~1 1/2 hours to get between Wake and Duke.

As for Duke...it really depends. Duke offers very, very few full-ride scholarships. Even the big scholarships, like the Robertson and AB Duke, only cover tuition. Needless to say, the chances of getting one of these, even for superb candidates, are small. As I said before, he does stand a good chance, but it's not guaranteed, and it probably won't be a full-ride.

I would still consider visiting Duke, however. If the cost makes visiting difficult or impossible, contact the admissions office- they may be able to work something out. It's not uncommon for them to pay the travel costs of recruited applicants.

You are a big help.

He's already got full ride some places he really does like fine, but if he loved the school and had to pay some part (say, room and board), I know he'd be fine about that. And of course, if he has advanced standing, that cuts down on time in school, and therefore the amount of debt.

Can someone refresh my mind about the date for the weekend. And about the brochure... do I call and grovel w/ admissions for a replacement?

I just read about the Robertson scholarship. Sheesh.. first time parents for ya. We missed that boat, and it was a luxury cruiser! sigh Feeling a bit like Jerry Lewis in a B movie at this moment.

Grateful again,
Sara

What was the brochure like? I got a likely letter, but I'm not sure if I recieved "the brochure"

There was no brochure, they said they;d send that out later. This was just primary information.

The Duke Up Close thing is FREE! Duke covers the cost. So, I hope the mom with the son looking for merit money sends her son, since Duke is going to pay for transportation to/from campus + meals, etc.
They didn't send out the specific Duke Up Close info yet, in my likely letter(s) at least. They said that info would be sent later: most of the likely-admits will be invited to Duke up-close, but some of the 350 likely students will not be. These latter few will instead be invited to scholarship finalist weekends. Even better! That info will be sent by mid-March, according to my likely letter. I hope I get to go to scholarship weekends!

On a separate note: Who here applied for the Robertson? We should be hearing soon, right?

Oh yeah...ok thanks for clearing that up.

What is the date of the Duke Up Close weekend?

And if we heard about that, would you think it's likely he won't be invited to the scholarship weekend? My thoughts are, why go if we know for sure we can't pay for it w/o scholarship? Falling in love with it would be like window shopping on Michigan Avenue for someone who's broke... just an exercise in frustration.

Well the letter (if I remember correctly) said that most of the 350 students are invited to Duke Up Close. Some students are not; these students are invited to scholarship weekends. You find out if you're a scholarship finalist by mid-March (if you didn't hear that you were a scholarship finalist by mid-March, you can be certain that you are not one, according to the letter FAQs). So, if you get invited to Duke Up Close, then no, you're not going to get a Duke scholarship. It is true that Duke Up Close would just be window-shopping, albeit all-expenses-paid window shopping! I might go anyway (I do live about 30 minutes away...but even if I didn't, I'd still love to meet all the other invited students and be on a college campus for free :))

And as I said in my last post, they haven't yet released the details for Duke Up Close. Again...early to mid-March is the notification for more details...

I've been on this board a while now and have never seen the abbreviation SN. Could someone please translate?

do you think if one doesn't get a likely letter it means they probably aren't likely to be a finalist for the robertson either?

I don't think that this is the case (though there may be some overlap). Robertson places much more emphasis on community involvement than the likelies, which as best I can tell are sent out mainly on the basis of grades, scores, and academic awards.

I read somewhere on this forum that likelys are mailed out to minorities as well. If so when do they come out? Hopefully I can snag one of those.

SN = special needs

Dude...Robertson...give me...please... :)

I didn't get a likely letter from anywhere yet :(.

mallomarcookie- my feelings exactly:)

Psh, please, vegangirl...I'd rather have a Yale acceptance letter than any of this crap
