duke and merit aid

i dont get financial aid, but lehigh offered me 10 grand a year in merit money. if i call duke's aid office, is there any chance they will give me some money?

Worth a shot. They might not match it because it's merit and not need based though.

does duke give merit aid or is it just special scholarships.

also, would duke be less likely to want to match lehigh over a school like washu or something else thats competes more with duke for cross admits?

are these- http://dukefinancialaid.duke.edu/merit_main.html - the only merit scholarships, or are there others/general merit awards?

The answer is no. Duke gives merit money to under 100 people per year, and it only gives merit money to people who are likely to get into HYPS. Sorry, but you aren't going to get merit money just because. Financial Aid you might get, but not merit money.

This was weird, the Duke financial aid office returned one of my emails saying Duke does not match other school's offers for need base financial aid. I could ave sworn I read somewhere that Duke does match. Does anyone know where exactly I can find this?

I've read that they don't match, which kind of sucks.

ummh is it too difficult to get merit aid the second year? I was thinking of paying all the 46k the first year and maybe get some merit aid the 2nd year..

It is literally impossible to get merit aid unless they offer it to you your first year. You can apply for financial aid, but merit aid is for people who otherwise would go to Harvard. Duke only offers like 50 or 100 merit packages a year.

Duke does not officially match financial aid offers. Generally if there's a large discrepancy with a peer school, Duke will adjust.

I don't know if there is a face-saving line (i.e. if they always pretend it was a clerical error), but this is a well-known phenomenon among financial aid programs.

Even then, however, Duke is unlikely to match or beat, only to readjust so that the packages are within the same ballpark.

And yes, Duke is unlikely to match a program like Lehigh, more likely to match a program like WUSTL, and most likely to match something in the Dartmouth/Penn/Columbia range. I get the feeling we'd just give up when it came to HYP, though.

mike, are you talking about matching merit or financial aid?

but I read somewhere that internationals can't receive financial aid ( they can but it's extremely difficult!!) but they can receive merit aid once they are enrolled!

I was discussing matching financial aid. Very few of our peers institutions give merit aid -- WUSTL, maybe? -- and we wouldn't match it anyway.

andriuxs: Duke don't have merit aid separately for domestic and international students. The only full tuition merit scholarships are the ones listed and they are typically offered as enticements for the HYPS students to enroll. If you don't get an offer by the time you get the acceptance letter, then it's almost 100% certain that you did not get selected. I am almost certain that they don't offer them to people at any time after enrollment .

As for financial aid, I believe Duke's policy is to meet 100% of the demonstrated need for all US citizens and permanent residents. That's because some portion of their financial aid is paid for by grants and programs from the federal government. If you are international, Duke does not guarantee that your need will be met 100% but will try to accommodate your needs as much as possible. That's because all aid given to foreign nationals have to be paid for out of Duke's own annual fund/endowment.

how can i get in touch with someone from undergraduate admissions? i wish to ask for merit aid, who do i contact?

Merit aid is given through the regular undergrad. admissions process.

You can't "ask" for merit aid. All full tuition scholarships are given to candidates selected through the strength of their application. As for financial aid, that's strictly need based.
