Duke and SAT's

For the new SAT, is a 1980 (M650 CR670 WR 660) a good enough score to give me a decent chance, or is it too low. Also, how many if any SATii's does Duke require. I'm planning on majoring in business if it helps at all.

Those scores are a bit below the average SAT scores. You really need to up those scores. It'll help a lot. I'm not sure which SAT II's Duke requires but I think it was Writing and something else. BTW Duke does not have an undergraduate business program. Most people who want to pursue business major in economics and then go to business grad school.

same problem here
i really want to go to duke, but i have a 2030 on my SATs

argghhghghhg! no me gustan standardized tests!!!!! ( i dont like....)

To add what what opspeed said, in addition to majoring in Economics, many earn a certificate in Markets & Management

The SATs aren't all important. If you're within a certain range, they won't keep you out of a particular school.

That said, your scores are a bit low. Try to get yourself solidly in the middle 50% of SAT scores for the schools you want. IIRC, Duke requires three SAT IIs. A Math SAT II should be a given, and a foreign language one can help with placement. As a general rule, take SAT IIs for classes you take an AP exam in (provided you feel confident about them, of course).

The SAT's are definitely not everything, as has and will be said time and time again on this message board. You can compensate it with curricular activities, a passionate essay, leadership roles and awesome teacher recommendations. I got a lower score than you and got in.
You do however, want a higher score for a more solid standing. Being within the middle 50% of scores is comfortable, because then the school will know that you can manage.
I've always felt that Duke really took into consideration the non-SAT components of the application.

I was just wondering... How about my situation? I got 800M, 770WR, and a shockingly low 630 for CR.. giving me a composite of 2200... the fact that I'm international makes it worse doesn't it, esp when ppl from my country are all scoring around 2250 and above?

My friend got a 550 on the Writing and got in, so I wouldn't worry too much about SAT's.

Of course the higher your SAT scores are, the better it is for your case, but as others have said before me, is that the only thing they consider? - no, not at all. Duke admissions considers 6 different parts of your app. (test scores, extracurriculars, grades, difficulty of courseload, essays, and I believe recommendations). Each section is graded from 1 to 5 and afterwards, is weighted differently to a total max score of 60. (This info is from Rachel Toor's book, a former Duke adcom). Out of all the sections, test scores is the only one to not recieve any weighting, thus it only contributes a total of 5 pts to the final score. Despite this, every pt matters since most competitive apps fall within 5 pts of one another. My point is that if u posess peculiar strength in any of the other areas, it can offset perhaps 1 or 2 fewer pts in the testing area, since those other areas are weighted times 2 or times 3.

oh btw, with the new SAT I, Duke requires only 2 SAT II tests (since writing is now on the SAT I) For science/math/engineering, I believe they ask that u take math IC or IIC, the other one is up to you.

It's a good idea to take a Math SAT II even if it's not required, especially if you're interested in business/econ.

I was wondering the same thing I got 710 verbal; 690 writing; and a 660 math (I know horrible the highest I have ever got is a 670 on the old test). Do you think that these scores are ok?

Pretty much anything <700 is a bit on the low side but no worries! They review ur file holistically, meaning scores are just 1 of many factors. If u think u can score higher in a retake, go for it! If u feel thats the best u can do, then just let it be. A personal story - I got a 1440 on the old SAT I, 750M, 690 V. I had actually taken a prep course with Princeton Review (b4, I was scoring in the 1300's) and even tho a 1440 is kinda low for Duke and CC in general, I felt that it was pretty much my max score. A year later, I contemplated about retaking it but on practice tests, I scored much lower in verbal (say 630-650) and better in math - as u can see Im not very verbally inclined :). Anyways, I ended up not taking it again but still fared well in the process b/c the rest of my application was pretty solid (in my eyes). So scores are 1 part of the bigger picture.

ynos, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm an int'l student as well and I scored a 590 in verbal and got in (my math was fine, like yours). What I did was I took the TOEFL, to let them know I was competant at English, and just not SAT English.... and the TOEFL was a piece of cake.
I think the TOEFL justified it, and let them know I'd be fine at Duke.

i suggest anyone takin the SAT 2's take math 2c.. its a joke (and my math is pathetic)

As far as SATIIs for Duke here's what you could do...FORGET THEM! Duke accepts the ACT as a replacement for the SATI and the SATIIs. Just take the ACT, score well, and eat a "Snickers" bar. :)
