Duke, Berkeley, Cornell, NYU

Hey,
I have recently been accepted into:
Duke-Engineering
Cornell -Engineering
Michigan -Engineering
NYU-Business
Berkeley-General College(most likely business after Junior Year)

I really want to leave my options open as far as a major is concerned, and I am interested in both engineering and business. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your help.

If I were you, I would choose Cornell

Thanks, I do like their engineering program and facilities, but I am a little afraid of the social life at Cornell.

RCMarron, congrats on your acceptances to these fantastic schools.

First, I would measure how much each school costs you and would consult w/ your parents about the affordability of each college, etc. Since all these schools are excellent, I encourage you to give serious consideration to the colleges that offer you the most aid.

Second, Cornell's social life is very good. It has one of the biggest Greek scenes in the U.S. colleges and students are very social and laid back towards each other. Some misinformed h.s. students worry about 'suicide' myths, cutthroat competition, and other negative images about Cornell, all of which are just false.

Also, I would consider what weather/ geographical setting you prefer. Duke is in the south. Berkeley by the Bay area. Cornell is in upstate NY...

Lastly, are you a big sports fan? Duke is undoutedly a very strong school w/ top sports programs, so you might want to consider that as well. If you are having a hard time deciding, I encourage you to visit schools and see which college campus and 'feel' you feel most comfortable at. Being happy at a college of your choice is a must for your success at college level. GL.

Thank you very much for that response, I appreciate your input. I am kind of concerned about Duke having a "snooty" reputation. I don't know if this is just something my family feels or if it is a common feeling. I have not visited it yet, so I can not make any judgments for myself, but I definitely get that vibe from the two Duke students that I know. Do you guys have that same feeling about Duke?

Cornell and Michigan Engineering far surpass Duke's engineering program. I would choose Cornell. It has perhaps the best undergraduate engineering program in the country combined with a great overall college experience.

I'm almost in the same situation with you (Duke, UCB, Cornell, NYU)

I'm going for Stern because I know I want to do finance after university..

As a Duke student, I would say it depends on the people you meet. There are many self-absorbed rich people here but for every person like that there are five awesome, intelligent, kind, hardworking, and down-to-earth people.

Also what kind of engineering are you interested in?
If you are looking into biomedical engineering or electrical and computer engineering, it would serve you well to pick Duke over the other universities.

I would highly recommend visiting each school if you can though.

Ummm...Berkeley EECS >>>> Duke EECS

Engineering + MBA will give you the best combo.

I'd choose Michigan (+100 if in-state). It's hard to transfer into Berkeley's College of Engineering when admitted to Letters & Science.
