Duke Biology Program

I have heard many stories about Dukes prestige programs in life science and especially their graduate Medical program.
My question is how Duke's Biology's program. Is it interesting? Research opportunities as a first year (freshman)? and How does it compare to other schools like JHU?

Thanks in advance

By graduate medical program you mean the school of medicine right? Because that’s a whole other school at Duke and not exactly the bio department…

Interesting? I thought biology was the same everywhere. Is this some kind of special biology that non-bio majors never hear about?

As for research opportunities for freshmen, yes, there are plenty if you make the effort to look. My bio-major friend who was a freshmen this year worked in his advisor’s lab for a semester and is working on alzheimer’s research this school at the medical center. You can also just email a bunch of professors and ask, that’s how most people get a foot in the door. As for the summer, there’s howard hughes at Duke for freshmen and plenty of internships/research positions out there.

Yeah as SBR said the Howard Hughes is a nice way to get research opps. And to answer the second part about Duke’s SOM, basically, it’s one of the best in the country. And the school thing about it is that is it RIGHT on campus, and so you have a lot of opportunities to take part in stuff going on there. It’s accessible :)

This is from a post I read a while back when I was choosing between colleges. It’s by bluedevilmike.

Sorry, by life science program, I meant like the departments of biology, psychology, environmental, and other departments that work with science that involves living things (anthropology and anatomy, botany) unlike physical science like physics and chemistry.

I was wondering how the biology department at Duke is. Are there any differences between biology at Duke and other colleges. (again by duke biology program, I meant the major in biology).

Because I’m debating if I should double major in Chem and Bio at Duke or Biomed engineering and Bio (I’m not a senior but I am very interested in Duke)

As for school of medicine, I said that because Duke is famous in part (but not exclusively) because of its School of medicine. I want to take the pre-med program at Duke

Thanks for all of your help

As an additional testament to the multitude of research opportunities, this year’s Siemens Westinghouse competition winners had done their research at Duke’s Comprehensive Cancer Center (as high school seniors).
