I realize you all may be biased regarding this, but if any of you are in a similar situation, could you give me some insight. Btw, I'm interested in studying BME and would study biological engineering at MIT if I go there

thanks

What I really like about MIT is its emphasis on research - UROP at MIT makes it so easy to get a position even as a freshman. But Duke has a med school and supposedly very good premed advising. And Duke BME has virtually 100% acceptance rate to med school (albeit after screening, or so I've heard)

It is not smart to go to MIT for premed. My identical twin goes to MIT, and I can tell you that almost all Medical schools place the emphasis on GPA. It is tough to go to MIT and get a good GPA. I would certainly choose Duke, but I might even choose a state school (with scholly) over Duke BME. I am a Duke BME but not premed.

MIT for premed, is practically unheard of in medical schools. I have checked around since my choice of undergrad was made taking into consideration future preferences of the adcoms at med schools. (Ex Brown premeds have the highest rate of getting accepted into their first choice of med school, compared to the other ivies..)

Duke is def a better choice plus it has a very reputable med school and reputable med post graduate programs.

I must confess that after interviewing at 11 medical schools, I never once ran into a single student from MIT. None of the classmates I met at various second look weekends were from MIT, and none of my current classmates or schoolmates are from MIT. The only person I know who went to MIT and on to medical school is my father, actually, now that I think about it.

That's not because they can't do it, although statistically MIT is an easy example to pick on through no fault of their own. It's probably because they've got a lot of great options at other places -- PhD programs, industry, etc.

(Be sure to notice the important correction in post 21.)
