Duke Class of 2018 Official Waitlist Thread

Hi Everyone!

Duke arts and sciences is my first choice, and I am nervously waiting on waiting lists to come out. I currently plan to enroll at Vanderbilt. When did waitlists come out for duke last year? Does anyone know when they might come out this year?

Thanks.

Last year I know they accepted people off the waiting list before May 1. I’m not sure when they will this year.

Did any of you send additional information to your regional officer? I did and they haven’t responded.

Have you guys sent in any letters/recommendations? If so, have you received a response from your admissions officer?

@teampat I sent a letter of interest but received no response. :frowning: Have you?

I am a Duke waitlisted applicant as well for the Class of 2018. I did send in a letter of interest/additional info and I recieved a quick reply back within several days from my regional admissions representative. I recommend that you guys send it in to your respective admissions officer rather than the generic overall admissions office email.

I really hope that I get pulled from the Duke Waitlist as its my top choice!! where are all you guys committing to in the meantime? @noosjuice‌ @teampat‌

@matrixsurgeon I sent it to my regional officer but got no response… It’s been a little over a week. Do you suggest I call him directly? I’m committing to Vanderbilt. How about you?

@noosjuice‌
Oh, then I am not sure why you did not get a response…Did you send it like RIGHT after decisions came out? Like within the first week after they came out? Cause I have heard that officers usually lose or accidentally overlook wait list emails when they are sent really close to the decision date as they are swamped with communication and such from like everyone. I suggest you simply reply to that email you sent by just like “checking in” or something to basically resend the initial email. Calling would be a intriguing option as well. I have not committed yet but I am between Vanderbilt and Cornell right now…(most likely committing to Cornell).

@matrixsurgeon Nope, I actually sent it just last week. However, when I sent it, I got an email saying that my admissions officer would be out of the office with limited access to email until yesterday (Thursday), so maybe my mail could have been overlooked. Do you think I should wait for a bit or send it now? And Duke is my first choice too! Congrats on Cornell.

@matrixsurgeon By the way, do you have any idea when they’ll start taking kids off the list? Or anything about this year’s yield?

@noosjuice‌
Oh…wow tricky situation you have there! I would simply just reply to the initial email you sent and mentioning that you are “checking in” or providing additional information if you have that. Just do it now or call soon as its almost May 1st and they start looking over wait listed files early May, unless they start notifying people in April like last year…finding out yield rate information is pretty difficult because some schools first of all don’t reveal that stuff and if they do its like in May.
BTW thanks, congrats on Vanderbilt!! Excellent school to be attending even if Duke doesn’'t work out. Hopefully both of us get pulled from Duke’s waitlist and get provided appropriate financial aid!

@noosjuice‌
However, I looked at last couple of years Common Data Sets and saw that pretty much <1500 people accept the wait-list every year and anywhere from like 150 to 350 people get in year in year out.

@matrixsurgeon Ok I sent him an email. I think you’re right about being considered before the deadline. I noticed that they started pulling kids off before May 1st even in 2012, so maybe that will happen this year as well. Regarding the CDS, I thought that about 200 kids at most were pulled per year?

I think 2011-2012 or 2012-2013 CDS showed 300 kids or so being pulled…I just threw 500 out there as the extreme high so I doubt that it is likely unfortunately… 250/1400 is around a 18% rate so I don’t know…

And for some reason, most of the recent years CDS have been missing a waitlist accepted number as the boxes are blank so who knows what the range truly is…

@matrixsurgeon That’s still a good number! What else did you do besides sending in a continued LOI?

@noosjuice‌
Well my school has good track record with Duke in terms of the fact that we have a good number of people applying there every year as well as some acceptances there in years past. My school’s administration has been in contact with Duke as well recently so I hope that will help but other than the LOI and just small communication with my officer before the decision date, I haven’t done much myself. I think I am just gonna stay put and wait it out unless I have some additional accomplishments or things to add to my application.

One thing I find weird is that this year’s waitlist duke thread is fairly quiet compared to years past!!

Hi guys! I’m another waitlisted applicant! And Duke is my first choice :slight_smile: I’ll probably commit to UC Berkeley (Regents) for now though. I have a question~for the letter of continued interest, are you typing it in the body of the email or are you attaching a Word document?
@noosjuice @matrixsurgeon
Thank you :)

And did you send your transcript to the overall admissions office?

@AspiringStudent I did both!

@noosjuice thanks :slight_smile: and the transcript?

@AspiringStudent‌
When I wrote mine, I simply wrote it in the context of a letter on an email with the whole “dear” and “thanks” parts. I don’t think it really matters which way you do it as long as the letter looks nice and organized

I did not send my transcript in because the school year and final final senior year grades for me are not decided until late May-early June.
