I applied by the priority deadline and still haven't been contacted for an interview...I live in NJ so there should be a good number of alumni. Does Duke weed out the kids beforehand? I doubt they do but if not I don't understand why it would take them this long to contact me.

There is no “weeding out;” however – as has been discussed SEVERAL times in the past months and years on CC (with respect, you’re about to attend college and a little research on your part might be worthwhile) – Duke assigns applicant interviews to a regional alumni volunteer leader, who then further assigns them to individual alumni volunteer interviewers. Perhaps the designated interviewer has been busy, ill, on extended business travel, tending to a sick relative, or any of dozens of other good reasons why he has not yet contacted you (bear in mind, these folks generally have extensive family and professional commitments, and they attempt to squeeze this volunteer service into unusually constrained schedules). Further, only a relatively few Duke alums are interviewers; therefore, you can live in an area with a large, strong alumni community and still have an insufficient number of designated and trained interviewers available.

I suggest patience for another approximately ten days. If, by 1 February you have not been contacted, you may wish to call Undergarduate Admissions. In addition, you should be aware that any candidate that is not interviewed may submit an additional recommendation, in lieu of the alumni interview report.

All alumni interviewers are volunteers who sincerely want to do this job well – for Duke and for you – but their real world priorities understandably may not always permit them to put your interview ahead of many other requirements.

I was accepted ED, and surprisingly, the alumni interviewer in my area did not receive my name or information during the applicant process. I learned this when a student from my school received an interview, and she mentioned me during it. The interviewer, who was the volunteer leader for the area, said that she never received my name and was not even aware that a student from my school was even admitted. However, she was aware of the other students in the area that applied.

Because of my own personal experience, I would contact the admissions office to see if your name was forwarded to the alumni volunteers. However, some might disagree with me on the basis that it might seem too pushy. I only recommend that you contact them because of my own personal experience.

Has this happened to any of you all before? I had an interview with a Duke Alumni, who never showed up. I was waiting for 45 minutes and they never came. I tried to call the number the woman gave me, and it was out of service. I do not what think of what just transpired.

@corvette427 that has never happened to me. That sounds very odd. However, I had my interview today and my interviewer was a little late. But that sounds very strange.

Supposed to have had my interview last week but the lady had a sick son and rescheduled. She seems super nice! And she’s a doctor at the same university I had an internship at

TopTier, I double checked the undergraduate admission site to confirm whether or not you should call the admissions office if you don’t get contacted for an interview by Feb 1st. Nowhere on the site does it say you should do so.

I would be cautious not to bother the admissions team on this as they’ve already gave clear information on who gets an interview and what it means if you do or do not get them. The extra recommendation letter does say suffice.

Jwest22: I understand your recommendation and it clearly is a reasonable approach. I suggested contacting Undergraduate Admissions – in Happyppah’s circumstances – because I know that New Jersey has very active AAAC interview committees. Were Happyppah located in, for example, Montana, I would do precisely as you suggested: have an additional recommendation submitted, only.

Got it. And I agree^

We live in NJ and both of my children, class of 2014 and 2016 were accepted to Duke - neither were given interviews. All of the other students in our town who applied to Duke however were granted an
interview. I think it is the luck of the draw ( and our last name is at the end of the alphabet??) In fact it was the only school that either applied to that they did not have interviews with. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Yeah same problem here. My friend who (I think) is way less qualified than I am recieved an interview for regular decision and I haven’t… Yet. By less qualified I mean straight B student who likes duke basketball

Thank you for your responses everyone! A Duke alumni contacted me yesterday for an interview. (although he stopped replying to my emails) I guess patience is the key here

RD applicant here. Still no interview but I am not worried because if I don’t get an interview that is ok. If I do that is awesome. All I know is that nothing is in my hands anymore. Just waiting time now.

^^ I love this attuitude! Go enjoy the second semester of your senior year! I didn’t receive an interview and got into Duke (like they say can happen…). Go forth and conquer!

I just got contacted for an interview today, and I live almost right next to Duke! So don’t worry about it guys.

Does anyone know when Duke RD decisions traditionally come out?

Duke’s official RD decision deadline is 1 April, however, in some recent years the decisions have been released in very late March.

Well what are you all doing to pass the time before decisions come out? I mean, it’s just the usual school work now… I guess I’ll be spending more time in the lab now since my evenings after school are now essentially all free…

I didn’t even apply by the priority deadline but got an interview. Unfortunately it was only 23 minutes… >.<

Really hoping it doesn’t break my application. After rejection from emory scholars, I need all the help I can get

@bobdylansmith123
You also a emory scholar applicant?? I think the group is in alot of different threads! I am sure that the interview doesn’t do much to help or hurt you.
