***Duke Class of 2021 Discussion Thread***

Wait I’m from Texas too! Yeah, a ton of my friends are applying ED to Rice, in part because Rice has a historic bias towards my school

Duke is very popular for a reach school in NC so it might just be because of the sheer volume of applicants. It’s a little annoying because most of the people I know applying don’t really care to go there too much but it’s in the area and a great school so they feel obligated. But then again, they all apply RD.

Also, just curious, but what is the perception of Duke where you guys live? Prestige obviously isn’t the important factor but I wonder if living so close impacts it-- people know it’s a really good school but are surprised when they realize just how selective it is and highly ranked. Seems like proximity kind of dilutes the prestige (that or just the fact that most people lile UNC for basketball…)

Ahh that’s so cool!! Where in Texas? I really hope Duke works out for us

I live in Arizona and people mostly seem to know Duke for its basketball. Sure, some people know about its academics but here, a lot of people go to ASU or UA so east coast unis aren’t mentioned as much.

And actually pretty surprisingly, a lot of my friends are not big fans of Duke. A lot of them applied ED to Stanford, Rice, ivies, etc. But I do feel like people in my area aren’t sure just how selective Duke actually is lol. A lot of them consider Duke a “second-tier” school in terms of selectivity, idk about you guys but I actually think Duke is more selective than like Cornell or something. Lol also might be because I’m a little biased

Yeah for selectivity Duke is comparable to lower Ivies like Dartmouth and Brown but probably a hair more selective than Cornell since Cornell is much larger

I was at the Carolinas Open House, they confirmed that NC/SC students get a slight edge. I think they said (this part might be mistaken) that it was a condition of the Duke Endowment.

I heard that too from someone @kellycameron

Well shit lol

I’m so nervous!! Wishing everyone the best  >:)

To answer your question @BB1313 I live in NC (30 min drive from Duke) and I actually didn’t know how selective Duke was until late Junior year! I thought that UNC was more selective until I looked up statistics, believe it or not. A lot of my friends have applied there because they thought they’d get in, but they didn’t because they underestimated the prestige. I applied because I got a chance to walk around campus 3 times and loved it. I hope the other people who live near me won’t hinder my chances of getting in.

Has anyone gotten their email yet?

nope

nope

nope…still anxiously awaiting

My friend just called and some dude said the Duke ED decisions would be available the 15th. He sounded very confident, she said. Then I called, and a nice woman told me definitively that it hadn’t been announced yet-- all within 2 minutes. Now, can I vent? Does anyone here think colleges keep it a mystery to increase their power and allure? It’s so obnoxious. I called U Chicago and was told “mid-December.” DUH! Like I didn’t know it was mid-December. Are they toying with their applicants? Am I just going crazy? They KNOW when it’s going to be. Don’t they?
