I don’t think they have a set number for different schools but they’re probably comparing kids from the same school next to each other (same course and extracurricular offerings etc). Don’t know though
It’s hard not to compare two students from the same school, I’m nearly certain they do. Also something to consider, you often times don’t have extremely stellar applicants apply under a binding contract like this – they have the luxury of shopping around and comparing offers. We’re most likely up against mid-range applicants who need the bump from early decision to nudge them in a favorable direction.
The other kid from my school was forced into it by his dad and is, erm, “mid-range” I would say. He is definitely banking on ED and URM so @evanescent0129 you may be right about a particular percentage of ED applicants. However, I know that personally, I applied ED only because Duke is my definite first choice and I don’t want to wait until April. I would consider myself competitive and am sure the majority of the ED pool is just as qualified as RD.
Also, does anybody know the % of ED that are recruited athletes?
For historically underrepresented (application wise) H schools at that particular University, I think having more than 1 candidate will definitely be beneficial. - as in better to be compared to real people than to the "void"of AP, EC etc.
For H schools that usually have some applicants and send a person or several annually - the less competition this particular year the better.
@BB1313, if I had to guess, I think you would be a minority in the ED pool. I know that I would (like to believe that I would) also be a competitive applicant in the regular pool, but there is larger confidence in the ED pool, any way you look at it. They claim that the RD pool is no more competitive than the ED pool, but I have a hard time logically believing it. Could definitely be wishful thinking though.
RD is way harder, no question

BTW Does anyone know when the results for ED are released?
The date hasn’t been released yet. The 15th at the latest though
I’m hoping earlier than the 15th (hopefully around the 10th). I will be going on a family trip to Beijing around that time which would make things hard when accessing my decision.
from a local one @TheTennisNinja
@BB1313 legacy is huge at Duke, so long as the parent/grandparent has shown consistent support by donating time and/or money. For ED applicants, the Legacy acceptance is approximately 36%. RD, approximately 17%.
hey dukies - what convinces you of power of legacy status at Duke? Anything besides the stats? Do you have a current affiliation? thanks.
@gwest2 Take a look at this thread on legacy: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/1897218-legacy-percentage.html#latest
According to a post that paraphrased Dean Guttentag, there is an institutional desire to admit legacies.
