I was hoping for closure, but all I got were waitlists, so I’d figure I’d start this thread for discussion. Does anyone know how many students Duke waitlists and what their acceptance rate from the waitlist is?
I got waitlisted at Duke too. I checked the FAQ and it said they usually have 1000 students accept the waitlist offer, and some years they have taken as many as 200 off the list, and in other years they’ve taken no one.
When are you guys planning on sending your letter of continued interest? And are you going to send updated transcripts along with it?
I was waitlisted at Pratt. Still hoping for the best
Why is this thread dead?
@lhw1998 no idea… hoping it means that there’s a small number of people on the wait list this year haha. But I heard Duke is known for having A LOT of people on the waitlist. Does anyone know the exact number waitlisted/chances of getting off of it. Hoping a killer LOCI will get me off of it!
Does anyone know about waitlist stats and/or when we should expect to hear back?
We are waiting. When does Duke decide?
According to the Duke CDS (https://finance.provost.duke.edu/common-data-set), looks like they admitted 99 from waitlist in 2013-14, 92 next year, 9 the year after. Guess all schools start working on the waitlist after the national candidate reply date of May 1st.
On another note, I will be giving up my accepted spot. Hope one of you from the wait list is able to get the spot that I decline.
I just got off the waitlist! Got a personal email from Dean Guttentag offering admission. Pratt 2021! Thanks @MedSciBud for giving me your spot.
@jakobk Congratulations! What did they say in the email?
Thank you @lonewolf3! I’m so beyond excited; praise God for these unexpected opportunities. I was rejected from 6 schools, already accepted offer at another school, but I’ll probably rescind it to attend Duke. I think I was just the first wave of waitlist offers though, so don’t lose hope yet! I pretty much interpreted my waitlist back in April as a rejection so I’m really surprised. Historically I’ve heard of them taking people between May 1 - May 6 or so; not sure how many people they’re taking, though.
I got an email from an admissions director asking if I’m still interested in Duke, I replied enthusiastically “yes,” and an hour later I got an email from Dean Guttentag offering admission
@jakobk CONGRATS!!! That’s incredible!
Best of luck to you @lhw1998! I’m not really sure yet if I’m gonna accept or not, if I don’t then hopefully you get my spot
@jakobk thanks!! I’m really worried because Duke was my dream school and I don’t want to give up. If you don’t mind me asking, why are you thinking of not taking the spot?
@jakobk Congratulations! But it is a surprise to me because I thought normally Duke would only start to look at the wait-list starting today. Is this a common practice for Duke to work on the wait-list before the May 1st deadline?
@lonewolf3
Ironically I accepted a spot at UNC. I’m weighing between the two now. UNC is a little cheaper and offers a really great business program with recruiting that’s nearly as strong as Duke. I know a guy who’s going to Goldman after he graduates this year. And Goldman is harder to get into than Harvard. Plus it seems like Duke is a little too elitist for me; just take a tour of both campuses (which I have) and you’ll probably see a marked difference in how outgoing and happy people are. I think part of that is because UNC is more southern. Biggest thing for me is the ‘fit factor’ though, because I’m a strong Christian and UNC seems like a better place for me to thrive as a Christian.
Don’t get me wrong, Duke was/is my dream school, too! I’ve been a Blue Devil sports fan and loved their academic program for years. But prestige isn’t as big a deal as everyone thinks. If it gets you the same job and the same - or at least comparable - education, then I’d rather be somewhere I’ll be happier and fit in better :D.
Sorry to share my life story with you. Hope it gives you a little insight though. You can be happy and thrive at any campus if it’s a good fit. If you’re concerned that it’ll hurt your career by going to a less prestigious institution, I encourage you to do some research that busts that myth. Check this out: https://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/the-college-solution/2011/03/01/the-ivy-league-earnings-myth
The study by Alan Krueger changed the way I thought about college. I used to be all worried and anxious about getting into the Ivy League. The quantitative research shows, though, that it’s more about the student’s drive, intelligence, and personality than about the institution. I know a lot of Ivy League students personally from summer camps, and they aren’t any better than anyone else, nor have all of them been successful. I encourage you to read “It’s the Student, Not the College” by Kristin White, as well. Hope all that encourages you if the Duke decision isn’t favorable - you can be successful wherever you go - but I pray that it will be!
@solomonleaf I’m not sure, is the deadline tonight at midnight or was it last night at midnight? I got an email from the admissions director at 12:35 AM this morning, so I figured they had pulled the trigger on their initial waitlist offers. I have heard of many people getting offers around May 4-6 though.
@jakobk The deadline is tonight (5/1) before 11:59:59 right? It seems quite usual for Duke. I guess you must be outstanding for them to miss!
Anxiously waiting for my results.
I got off for Pratt today! Same process as @jakobk
