Duke, Cornell, or NYU Stern?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys could give me some feedback on the above mentioned colleges. I'm not sure where to go! I plan on majoring in some kind of business degree. And I will be visiting colleges pretty soon but I still want to hear some opinions. Thanks for the help!

Hey man.

I go to Duke and got into many colleges, including Duke and Cornell (didn’t apply to NYU).

I visited both campuses, and have friends who go to both, and for me Duke seemed more appealing.

This was due to many reasons: My friends told me that Cornell in November, December, January, February, and March is not a good place to be because of the cold. Usually the cold wouldn’t be noticed much, but because Cornell is in a rural area the cold will limit you from doing outdoor activities.

Duke had more opportunities for what I wanted to go into (it was ranked higher too, but I honestly don’t care about rankings, and make sure you don’t base your decision on that!).

Duke seemed like a generally more fun place. It especially disturbed me about the suicides. Some people say the suicides are played up, but 6 people committed suicide at Cornell just this semester, and 3 of them did so on the same weekend 2 or so weeks ago.

So that is my opinion, and obviously it is biased because I already had the same choice you did and chose Duke. I can tell you honestly that Duke has been the best experience of my life so far.

As for business/economics, both schools are good for it. Know that for Duke, at least, the intro. class to econ. will teach you a lot but will also drain you a ton. It is intensely hard. One cool thing I know of is the marketing club, in which people manipulate stocks by gathering data.

Duke is known for a lot of business oriented people, so if you want a more thorough opinion you should probably call someone with info. or find an undergrad. who is majoring in economics.

Good luck! Can’t go wrong either way.

P.S.: Although NYU might not be as “prestigious,” New York City would be an awesome place to go to college in, I think. The Raleigh-Durham area would be a distant second, with Duke, and at least for me Upstate New York/Ithaca would be an even more distant third.

Good luck!

Duke is at about the same level as Stern for getting into top investment banks/consulting firms (in terms of the amount of on-campus recruiting). Many, many people at Duke end up following this route (not initially, but by senior year, you see as many (if not more) than you do premeds).

Duke has a new Finance Minor that you should consider if you’re planning on i-banking. Before that, most people interested in i-banking would just do Econ (and some would do the “Markets and Management” Certificate–basically just a bundle of classes oriented towards business).

I think Duke and Stern are better for on-campus recruiting than Cornell. Check out the “Investment Banking” forum within collegeconfidential.

" Duke is at about the same level as Stern for getting into top investment banks/consulting firms (in terms of the amount of on-campus recruiting)."…false. If you look up what schools interns and analysts go to at ibanks, it usually goes Harvard, Wharton, Princeton, MIT/Stanford, Dartmouth, Duke, Yale, Columbia, Penn CAS, Cornell, and other schools with Stern around 15th,16th,17th. Plus, remember that almost everyone at Stern wants to go to i-banking. So it actually doesnt do that well at all. If you don’t believe me, you can look up this information easily on the investment banking forum or at wallstreetoasis.

Lightzout’s probably right. But DCK7, if you’re interested in business, go to those 2 sites that he mentioned–wallstreetoasis (separate website) and CC’s investment banking forum. They have plenty of user rankings of on-campus recruiting. The key thing is that on-campus recruiting is VITAL for breaking into i-banking/consulting.

DUKE > than all of them!

Thanks for all the help guys! I’m going to do some research myself on the sites you guys gave me. But at this point, I’m leaning towards becoming a blue devil :)
