@havenoidea I disagree with you about Duke’s prestige. I do not think of it as being below the ivies. Yes, everything is below HYP, but Duke is absolutely on par with Penn, Columbia, Cornell and so on. I have no affiliation with Duke but I had to chime in because this discussion is so ridiculous.
Yeah, I still have the x
It seems like they’re updating these documents in waves but it doesn’t do any harm to call just to be sure!
Duke said they’d send an email out about the decision day “several days in advance.” When do you all think they’ll let us know? Hopefully this weekend?
in the past it has been about 3 days before
Maybe I wasn’t clear in my post. Obviously, we -my family - know that Duke is absolutely on par with many (if not all) of the “ivies” (I put them in quotes because it’s silly to me that people single out an athletic league as being more prestigious) and other top schools! I was saying that where we now live, people don’t see it that way. We are living in a small city, with long generational ties, and my point was the opposite of what you all took away!
Our S wouldn’t have ED’d there, where IF he gets in, we’re on the hook as full pay for 80k a year if we thought otherwise.
And, I didn’t say this in my post because I don’t like to come across as bragging about my kid, but he is probably about 3rd in his class (they don’t rank), 35 ACT (taken 1 time and with no test prep; I am 100% sure that had he done test prep, as we had our other 2 kids do, he would have gotten a 36), 4.0 UW GPA, 800 M SAT (from 10th grade), 770Physics SAT, in Linear Algebra and Differential Equations right now and got a 97 last trimester in Logic and Probabilty (a college level discrete math class taught at his school by a math PhD), 5’s on both phys C portions, calc BC, and other APs (he’s maxed out the APs he can take at his school, and was beyond AP level math after 10th grade) and has ECs I don’t want to mention. His math teacher (an MIT PhD, not the logic teacher) wrote him an extra rec for another top school where he went undergrad. So, presumably, that would have helped in an ED there, but he chose Duke.
What I was saying is that the other kids like him in his grade applied to Stanford, Harvard, MIT. Our S ED’d to Duke. He’s incredibly nervous that he won’t get in, especially given how many kids from his school applied there ED this year, TO, and the huge increase in apps and less open seats. He obviously knows the quality of the education and students at Duke, as do we! And, we don’t care that people here don’t know this. I pointed out what a dad said because it shows the ignorance here and it’s ridiculous (besides being rude).
Can we put this to bed, please!
Does anyone know if they have a set time for the emails? At what point do we assume it’ll come out after 12/17?
They almost always come out 7 pm ET. As for the day, if we don’t get an email on Monday about when decisions come out, then we should expect it to be Friday or next Monday.
@GoldPenn Thanks for chiming in! It is ridiculous!
mid year report isn’t due until mid-february. it’d be your semester grades if you’re on a semester system so don’t worry about those, i don’t think anyone should have turned them in yet.
Does anyone know how Duke views class rank? Since it’s not on their common data set do they just skip over it? I am assuming they use it in some sort of way, just not sure how much weight it holds…
I don’t know if anyone else has seen this but this article was posted on Duke Chronicles yesterday giving more details about Early Decision applicants.
https://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2020/12/duke-university-admissions-record-early-decision-application-lower-admit-rate
Thanks for this! I was wondering when they were gonna post more info.
I don’t think it’s too important. The past reports before it was left blank says it was considered, so it’s not a huge factor. Duke is also very holistic as well!
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal as long as you’re in the top 10% of your class. I mean, a lot of schools don’t rank and the ones that do all weigh GPAs differently.
At my school the val took 5-ish AP classes and kids ranked 2-12 took 6-8ish (everyone is on a 4.0 scale) I took 13 and I’m not in the top 10 but I doubt Duke would care too much about that, it wouldn’t make much sense since they don’t know the rigor of everyone before me and others in similar positions. (not that that’s an excuse, though)
It’s all about the big picture!
I saw that. He said they admitted both TO and test applicants but did not release any percentages. He seems pretty strong about making it an even playing field but he does not have control over all decisions. Regional AO’s will hold a lotttttttt of power this year
my school doesn’t even rank students (and i’m pretty sure our depression rate would skyrocket if we did). they definitely look at school context to figure out course rigor and compare GPAs and such but i don’t think they care too much about class rank
Same here!!
if decisions come out thursday we will get an email tomorrow right?
based on the timelines for past years, yes
