they say duke is for southern white prep kids
in my opinion, all kinds of kids go there…but i guess thats a good chunk of the pop
i love columbia because it is in NYC and there are a lot more ways to bond (through similar interests)

Lets not resurrect the dead threads please. Let them rest in peace.

self-segregation exists to an extent at duke- a lot of the asians stick together, international students stick together, athletes stick together, african americans stick together- and this is coming from my brother who goes to duke. Not to say that no one from different races hang out with each other, but that maybe since duke is so diverse it just happens.

Not to be picky but I think we already established that there is self segregation. It’s not worse than any other school though

of course self-segregation can be found at every school. I transfered from a top school to duke though, and duke for sure has much stricter boundaries. I think it is strengthened by the fraternity/black fraternity system and southern hint of racism. so yes, there is self segregation. not so much between whites/asians, although it exists. But very much so between blacks/whites. unless of course you are an amazing person like me, or my group of friends, who are of ALL different races/genders/majors/social groups/sexual orienations
and you can find a lot of students willing to come out of their comfort zones, which is great. But it just doenst happen as much as at other schools. But things have changed a lot in the past 5 years!

I recently accompanied our son and a few of his friends to the Costco near Duke (I have the card). We looked like an advertisement for “it’s a small world” or something. One each: Asian, AA, South Asian, white. This is representative of the larger group that they hang with.

Guess they are all as amazing as dormguy10.

It is my hope that this really isn’t all that rare. I just know that it wasn’t a challenge for our son, it just happened that way. But then, he did not go Greek. I don’t know the role that would have played.

i go here and my friends are all different colors

i have to say that there are asians that only hang out with other asians

and also that people that speak the same foreign language, ie Spanish, generally tend to group together, but that doesnt mean that they all do… everywhere you go, all over the country ethnic groups tend to create little niches where they feel comfy, but there are also those who branch out of their comfort zone…thats what college is all about. i definately dont see self segregation a problem at duke. it is very diverse and people hang out with a mix of different people from all over.
