I also know a top recruit for next year. As far as I know, he is still planning to go. He hardly talked to any other schools. (he'll fit right in.....)

hazmat, your smart-ass comments are in stark contrast to the general tone of actual concern and thought about the situation here. If you can't come up with anything better than that, stick to your ivy tower where no transgressions are committed against the less fortunate.

Very interesting articles posted on NYT and ESPN.

Hoosier Mama???? Or is that Whose Your Mama???? You seem to be driving around an oval at high speed waiting to hit the wall. Your articulate posts have added much here. As your stress levels have climbed your coping seems to have come unglued. Hang in there.....soon you will be graduated and into the real world where situations like this don't happen much.

HazMat - I am so far into the real world and away from the walls of Ivy where you are cradled and stroked daily...
I don't really know what your agenda is here, but it's pretty obvious by your total # of posts that not a lot else in your life is interesting enough to bother with. Like the real world.

Pressler resigns. Season cancelled. As it should be.

"Duke lacrosse coach resigns

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

April 5, 2006, 5:46 PM EDT

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University's lacrosse coach resigned Wednesday and the school canceled the rest of the season amid a burgeoning scandal involving allegations that three players on the highly ranked team raped a stripper at an off-campus party.

Mike Pressler spent 16 seasons at Duke and won three Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Last year, his team appeared in the national championship game.

"Coach Pressler offered me his resignation earlier this afternoon, and I accepted it," said Duke athletic director Joe Alleva. "I believe this is in the best interests of the program, the department of athletics and the university."

The rape allegations have roiled the campus and the city, raised racial tensions, and heightened the long-standing antagonism between the privileged students at the elite university and the poorer people of Durham....

Earlier Wednesday, authorities unsealed documents stating that hours after the alleged rape, a player apparently sent an e-mail saying he wanted to invite more strippers to his dorm room, kill them and skin them. It was not clear whether the message was serious or a joke.

"The court released today a previously sealed warrant, whose contents are sickening and repulsive," said Duke President Richard Brodhead said in announcing the cancellation of the rest of the season. ..." http://www.newsday.com/sports/lacrosse/ny-spduke0406,0,707106.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines

indy - from my prior comments you can see that I am in agreement that some of this belongs at the feet of the now fired coach. If he made citizenship the first and utterly significant priority for his players, but particularly scholarship players (and those are generally the leaders of the team) - a condition precedent to get within 100 yards of the field - this stuff doesn't happen. And I am really angry and sad as an alum that he didn't do so.

And by the way, I find it somewhat humorous and yet tragic as to the queries about what recruits will do next year. Lacrosse will likely descend into club sport status for a while. The damage this team has done is just that bad.

mam - I share your outrage 100% as an alum as expressed repeatedly on this thread. Having read the affidavit on-line (see News and Observer) it is clear from the way they were using aliases that these kids knew they were way over the line even before the s*** when down. I sincerely hope there is prison time involved for those responsible and they learn what it is like to be on the receiving end of their actions...broomstick and all.

I would guess that there will be a D1 lax season next year minus anyone who is currently under indictment at that time, minus probably about 12-15 more transfers. Again, this is uninformed speculation at this time. Look on the bright side - lots of PT for frosh!!!
oh by the way, you think Redick heard it from the crowd this year - wait until Duke lax goes on the road next year and they are protested, picketed, and all treated like criminals. fun fun fun. I would say Duke Lacrosse is knocked out of contention of any sort for at least 5-7 years.

I would also imagine that the penalties for off-campus activity that attracts the attention of the Durham police, beginning with underage alcohol and the like, will result in far more stringent university punishment in the future, especially with athletes. This incident has already been blamed on underage alcohol, but I have my doubts as the use of aliases and the extremely quick emptying of the house suggest a more calculated and disturbing scenario organized by the ringleaders. There are 1000s of off-campus parties per weekend in this country involving vast quantities of booze where nothing like this occurs.

Ironically, back in the day 80s when I was there, the drinking age allowed parties to be open on campus and the U to more directly oversee and regulate/punish activity. Was there crazy drunken behavior and all the other stuff that went with it? Of course. We were not angels and never pretended to be. But the misguided yes I said misguided 21 year old drinking age has criminalized normal student behavior that goes on in EVERY country and culture in the world, and sets up an underground party scene beyond U control where this kind of garbage can occur.

Mam, I do believe that Brodhead is getting the job done at this time, but the proof will be in the pudding over the next 3-6 months. No less than the future of his presidency and the reputation of the school depends on it.

More from President Brodhead-

As a Duke alum, I just got the letter from President Broadhead about the Lacrosse scandal, and came to the CC board to post it. Thanks DukeEgr93 for posting the link on your recent post. I hope others will take the time to read this letter and appreciate the efforts Broadhead is doing to address all the issues.

My question is that Brodhead mentions investigating the team so apparently he is saying he as the President had no knowledge of the culture? Had heard nothing?? Was not able to see records with infractions listed? I just don't quite understand that. I think that by 15 May is very ambitious indeed.
