I really like the academics and campus setting of Duke. I have a 33 on the ACT and think I would be a viable candidate for Duke; however, I question the social setting of the school. I was wondering if everyone at the school is clad in designer clothes and just loves to party. Obviously the student body is very intelligent, but is it shown outside the classroom? I lean far left and doubt I will ever join a frat. Basically, how does Duke lean politically and socially? What is the environment like for different sexual orientations, ethnicities, and hippies??

You really, really, really need to visit campus. I had the same question when I was applying, and my question was answered within 5 minutes of me stepping out of the car.

hhookem168,

This is a personal question to you: I’m taking it that your “Who knows?” is Duke University

^ Yeah he’s a Dukie.

Are you a prospective student cdz?

I’d say that you’ll find a great diverse population- as least that was what I have observed. I think you’ll find that there will be some people who are preppy and some who are rich at just about any university you attend.

optic, I have an answer, the answer starts with a “Y” and rhymes with “Tess”
:D

Oh and I agree with 2by2
If you go to Yale, there are kids from east coast prep schools that are “fed” into Yale

I would echo the posts made by Duke student above in that the campus is very diverse.

On the other hand, I would also caution the OP not to box himself in and close off different possibilities. While these concerns are certainly valid, an open mind would be very help when evaluating colleges.

Duke is actually incredibly diverse, more so than any ivy or similar college.

20-25% are Asians, 8-10% are African American and I think 5% are Hispanic. I think those are in the relative ballpark of the minority

“Obviously the student body is very intelligent, but is it shown outside the classroom?”
Oh yes if you go visit there are people help each other outside the classroom, in the dorms, on the lawn, restaurants etc.

“I was wondering if everyone at the school is clad in designer clothes and just loves to party.”
Umm you should visit because there are always going to be places where people wear designer clothes and places where people love to party. But in short I would say no more than any other university.

hahaha whats wrong with wealthy preps? Don’t be so quick to judge or sterotype…

Anyway Duke does have some wealthy “preps” but all schools that cost 50 grand are going too have wealthy “preps”…And Duke definately has a more diverse racial and economic student body than most top 20 schools (They have great financial aid, or so I have heard)…

Yes, Duke is filled exclusively with wealthy preps. MIT has only Asian nerds. Everyone at Vanderbilt is in a sorority, even the men. Everyone at Dartmouth wears LLBean sweaters and skis.
