I have recently been admitted to Duke but am concerned about lesbian life there. I know that Duke ranks very highly for LGBT resources and acceptance. However, I have heard often that, for undergrad, there are very few out gay women and thus, it is extremely difficult to date. Can someone comment on the lesbian experience at Duke?
I’m not a member of the LGBTQ community at Duke, but good friends of mine are. I can’t speak to the lesbian experience in particular (sorry) but wanted to say that SLGs (selective living groups) on campus like Nexus and Round Table have a great LGBTQ community. We also have a few rising drag queens and kings that perform for students on campus. The LBTQ community is small and intimate — overall a really fun group of people.
The LGBTQ organization on campus is expanding. An example would be their efforts to form an invitational weekend like BSAI, and their efforts to talk about intersectionality. It’s a great time to join Duke as an LGBTQ student.
Sorry that I couldn’t answer your question more directly. I hope this information is still useful.
