Duke math

Hello, I’m going to be a freshman at Duke and I was wondering about the math classes. I enrolled in math 105 because I only took a year of calc without AP. I was thinking of majoring in chemistry or math, but it requires math 111 as a prerequisite. My question, is math 105 a prerequisite of math 111? Would I have to take math 111 after 105? I can’t seem to find the answer even though I checked on the placement guidelines online. Also, what’s the difference between the two classes? Is math 105 a calculus class?

It seems as though Math 105 is not necessarily a prerequisite for Math 111, but that Math 105 is recommended for students without much calc experience. After 105, you’d take 106 and then 111 followed by 112. Based on the Chemistry Majors Handbook on the Duke website, 111 is necessary for a major in chemistry. I’m assuming the same for math. 111 focuses more on calculus topics while 105 incorporates review of geometry, algebra, and etc… if I remember correctly. Course descriptions for 111 and 105 are found on ACES in the synopsis section of each course.

@DramaIce Actually, I just called the academic advising and they said math 105 And math 111 are the same. Well, math 105 And math 106 are equivalent to math 111. So after math 105, then it’s math 106, And then math 112 which is calc 2. Some students begin with math 111 then continue on to math 112, while others start at math 105 then 106 and then math 112. It’s like taking two parts of math 111, only it’s less challenging. But you are right that there is a 106 after 105. Which means taking 105 And 106 would satisfy my prerequisite for a math/chem major.
