Duke, Northwestern, or WashU

for pre-med, any thoughts?

All three would prepare you well for medical school. It comes down to preference/fit. Duke has the convenience of the medical school being on the same campus as undergrad. This allows easy access for research opportunities. At WashU, the medical school is separate, although a bus- or car-ride away. I don’t know about Northwestern.

You are very fortunate to have great schools to choose from. Congrats, and good luck in the decision-making process.

BTW, there was a poster in previous years who summarized the opportunites for pre-med at Duke - Bluedevilmike, I think. You might try searching this forum for those posts.

how about the social atmosphere between washu and duke?

Northwestern’s pre-med is not comparable to Duke or WashU’s.

^i agree with that, for the most part.

IMO, Duke’s atmosphere is a bit more wild, especially because of it’s sports/alcohol/frat scene. that being said, WashU is a pretty active campus too, if a bit more reserved than Duke. there are a host of parties at and around washU, just not to the degree of duke. again, IMO, i found washu students to be the most friendly students out of any school i visited. they are bit more down-to-earth compared to the east-coast atmosphere of Duke.

You should read BlueDevilMike’s post about how awesome pre-med is at Duke. I think it’s floating around the forums somewhere…

Anyways, one huge advantage for Duke is that the hospital is situated right on campus; in fact, the entrance to the medical complex is on the main quad itself, making it very convenient to go to volunteer or research opportunities in the hospital. Furthermore, if you like going out/drinking, Duke has a very active social scene centered around the Greek system, and is definitely more active than the social scene at WashU. Academically speaking, Duke probably has a negligible advantage over WashU, but if you perform well at both places, you will be going to a top-tier medical school.
