Duke & Notre Dame

Known more for academics or athletics (i.e. Duke bball, ND football)?

When I think Duke I think bball, graduate studies, and divinity school. When I think ND I think of the West Wing.

Similar student bodies.Adjacent towns depressed, dangerous, ugly. Both gorgeous campuses.

curiouslee, what do you have against Duke? Your hatred seems to be a level above CC’s hate; thats says quite a bit.

It depends on what group of people you’re talking about. When it comes to the general public, they’re both known more for sports, IMO. But if you’re among academics and other professionals, they’re obviously regarded as great schools academically.

When I think of Duke, I think of a subpar basketball team that is consistently overrated and is known for is ability to choke.

When I think of Notre Dame, I think of Rhudy.

When I think of Duke, I think of lacrosse, rape, & blue devils.
When I think of Notre Dame I think of annoying Catholics.

I hate it when people equate rape with Duke, it was a false allegation, all those kids went to my school, their lives and their families lies were ruined by those lies, i felt so bad for them.

The liar/accuser who got that whole thing started was actually invited to come speak at my school (UNC) by a student group. She came about a day after Tancredo was shouted off campus and was met warmly. Made me sick.

Did they actually show her face on TV? They never usually show the accuser’s face. I never saw the face of the boy who accused Michael Jackson nor the women who accused Kobe Bryant.

Yep, face and name-Crystal Mangum. She’s already “written” a book about the whole deal too. The whole “we don’t name victims of sexual assault” policy doesn’t stay in effect when it turns out that the claims were bogus.

while i think duke is overrated and gets more lay prestige because of its bball program, i do think its professional programs are all pretty decent. none of them stellar, but always in the top10-15 range (business, law, med). they’ve gotten some bad press in the past couple of years with the alleged rape and mba cheating scandal.

notre what? oh yeah, they have a college fball team…

Dookies think that they’re awesome

Haha I looked up how she looked on facebook and there was a group made slandering her name.

Yea its very unfortunate about those false allegations. Ridiculous.

And whoever thinks Notre Dame is simply football is completely wrong. Notre Dame is an extremely prestigous university.

As much as I hate dook basketball, I have to stand up for Duke med (since I’m starting work at the medical center there this month!). It’s an amazing med school, I think it’s ranked sixth in USNWR research or something (not that it really matters, seeing as med school rankings are ******** anyway). Personally, I like the med school curriculum a lot. I would call it a stellar med school. Dunno about the business and law schools though.

C’mon now seriously. Academically Duke>Notre Dame.

@ noobcake:

I generally disrespect schools like Duke and ND which sacrifice their academic standards to field competitive sports teams so as to enhance their academic reputation. Ironic, don’t you think?

Not to exaggerate, but some of the Duke bball players and ND football players are barely literate, for crying out loud. They somehow manage to graduate by clustering into easy majors such as sociology or communications. We’re talking about kids with sub-900 SAT scores here. On academic merit alone, they’d have trouble getting into community college otherwise, let alone so-called top 25 schools.

Honestly, the face of a serious academic institution shouldn’t be the bball or football coach. The fact that Mike Krzyzewski and Charlie Weis are the highest-paid employees of their respective universities suggests to me that something is really out of whack.

If you’re truly proud of your school, more power to you, I guess. But frankly, I’d be embarassed to go to a school like Duke or ND.

Or Stanford, I would assume. Particularly since it has lower APR scores than Duke.

^ Actually if you follow athletic recruiting, Stanford has the highest admissions standards of any BCS school. It is also the only BCS school for which athletic offers are contingent (read: NOT guaranteed) upon acceptance to the university. Not only that, Stanford actually requires its recruits to submit an application, which Duke and ND do not. Often, Stanford loses athletic recruits to the Ivy League because they are rejected from Stanford.
