I am a senior in high school, in Florida. I have always wanted to go to Duke University, but coming from an upper middle class, can't afford it, yet don't qualify for financial aid. I got into the NROTC unit at Duke and want to know about life as an NROTC student, can you still be involved in student life (club sports, clubs, etc.). I also have always aspired to go to Medical school, and want to know what the chances are for going straight from undergraduate to medical school in ROTC. Thanks for any input.

Duke is a great school for NROTC and AROTC. Have you started the application process for an NROTC scholarship? Available scholarships are more limited this year but if you are a top student with a high GPA, 1400-1500+ SATs, leadership and athletics you should do fine. You should know that it is very competitve to get an ROTC scholarship slot at Duke and of course you’ll need to gain admission to Duke separately.

You can go from NROTC as an undergrad to medical school on a military scholarship. Have you looked at this site?

[Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences](http://www.usuhs.mil/)

That should get you started. Good luck.

Thanks, i have already gotten the scholarship and been awarded a slot at Duke. I am just wondering what life will be like at Duke ROTC and what its like specifically at Duke to go from ROCT undergrad to medical school!

When I toured Duke recently I talked to military professionals in both NROTC and AROTC. I was impressed to meet several students who intend to go to med school after graduation. There seemed to be about two per class per branch and iirc most students from Duke who want med school billets are successful.

I suggest that you contact the unit and ask them to introduce you to a current NROTC student who is going to med school. Service selection was about a month ago so the 1/Cs all know their billets.

Congratulations on the slot at Duke - it was probably harder to get than you realize. I’m guessing you applied ED - good luck again- I hope you are successful.

Congrats on the NROTC scholarship! My son is waiting to hear back about NROTC and AROTC scholarships. We visited Duke and met with ROTC officers. Seemed like you will have a great balance of college life with a bit of Rotc thrown in! If you don’t mind me asking, when were you notified about the scholarship?

I was notified on Monday of this week (the 30th, i believe) online, i still haven’t gotten the letter in the mail. I was an ISR candidate and i sent in my application in early July, so i thought it took quite a while!

Thanks yellowbird. I think my son’s application was ready for boards a few weeks ago. This is a tough wait!
