Duke or Northwestern (MMSS)

So for the past week I had basically decided on going to Duke next year, but now that I've gotten into MMSS at NU I'm starting to wonder if it will give me more opportunities than Duke. Would I be getting basically the same education by doing Econ at Duke with the finance concentration and perhaps a minor or second major in Math? Also, how would the job opportunities compare for the two schools? If it were just Duke vs Northwestern without MMSS I would choose Duke but the program just seems to be tailored perfectly to what I want to study.

(PS: It would cost me 25k a year more to go to Northwestern, so is the extra 100k by the time I graduate worth it?)

If all costs were equal, I would say that no, MMSS wouldn’t give you a much of an advantage over going to Duke, especially if you want to go into finance. In that case, I’d say go to the school you like.

But since you’d also have to pay 100K more for a school that you don’t like as much and wouldn’t get you anywhere that Duke can’t, my advice is to go to Duke.

paying 100 thousand more for NW does not make sense. Take a look at the cost of MBA and related degrees and recognize that there are few scholarships to such masters programs. Most people borrow and in this economy that is risky.

wow…on getting that level of reduction to Duke~ !!! good heavens. Don’t think twice. Son’s roomie is from North Shore Chicago at Duke…and went to NW for a course or two in a strategic manner for premed in the summers and had many friends at NWestern and he feels that Duke is just more fun (of course he would say that… but he is a huge sports person.)
The weather in Durham…is a selling point.

How would they compare if you ignored the difference in price?

well…I have been to NW once and Duke 20 times, so based on my vast personal experience, Duke wins! :)

come on. 100 thousand less to go to Duke vs NWestern…is there really anything to discuss unless you are quite wealthy?

Chicago beats Durham for museums and major everything if you want a great city, Chicago can be terrific.

Both degrees have national reach for recognition but I would give the edge to Duke…sorry. Alum network for Duke is pretty great for a medium sized university.

My son was a Duke Econ major. It is a very rigorous department at Duke and a very popular major.
