I'm choosing between these two- any thoughts or advice?

duke!

what do you plan on majoring in?

I would suggest Northwestern – beautiful campus and wonderful facilities. Located in a nice, safe area as well. Also, midwestern folks are very friendly! =)

definitely duke. went to both. duke better campus, better weather, much more of a special place.

i would go with Northwestern. You have access to one of the most amazing cities in the world and a world-class campus on the lakefront! Great Academics and students. The school spirit is cool too (maybe a bit below Duke’s).

I have no plans for a major right now- I’m just going to take a broad range of classes and see what I like.

The quarter system at NU gives you more chances to sample more classes. The 6 schools at NU also mean a wider range of courses and disciplines is available.

According to the CDS, Northwestern offers 1757 courses to undergraduates. I have no idea how many courses Duke offers, but similarly sized Stanford offers nearly as many courses (1454). I’ve talked about this repeatedly on UNC threads, but Duke and UNC offer cross-registration with each other.

That said, I think the two are pretty similar. If you can handle the cold, Chicago is a great city.

i feel like academics and atmosphere are very similar - maybe consider location? this is a hard decision… i’d probably pick duke because of the location and slightly bigger sports.

location wise i think NU wins b/c of chicago.

I had forgotten about the quarter system- that was a big part of Northwestern that I liked!

Duke is you love sports and academics…NW if you want to live close a very cool city but focus more on acadmeics.

IBclass,
Those numbers are for one term (fall). Northwestern has 3 terms a year while Stanford has only 2. So the diffrence between Stanford and Northwestern isn’t just ~300 (1757 - 1454). It’s way more than that. The range is one of its biggest assets.

i personally would go with Northwestern, because I enjoy being able to access Chicago, I enjoy the large, but not too large (ala Duke) Campus, and the lakefront environment! I also like that Evanston feels like a really nice College Town in comparison to Durham.

Also, sports at NU are pretty big. It is part of the Big10 after all.

Northwestern and Chicago.

"Also, sports at NU are pretty big. It is part of the Big10 after all. "

Sports are big at Duke as well. No better place to be a college bball fan.

duke

Let’s not get carried away here.

Granted, Duke has more uniform architecture on campus, but not many campuses are set on a large body of water (w/ a beach to boot) w/ views of the Chicago skyline.

Both are perfectly fine and “special” in their own way.

I’d say that students at UNC, UConn, MSU, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, etc. would beg to differ.

Follow your heart. They’re comparable schools.
