Duke Or Rice

Prestige has VERY little bearing on med school admissions.

I am in the EXACT same position as you, Im glad you made this thread because i was gonna make it too. Looking for more suggestions.

Also, isnt Duke ED 42% acceptance (from class of 2011 profile)..Rice is like around 30%

Which school awards more aid? Their tuition is about the same...$43k vs $47k

I'd love to go out of state too, but here are a couple of things i considered:

Rice is right next door to TMC, so a lot of opportunities for volunteering, researching,..basically better tools for getting into medical school. Im sure you can find the same thing in Durham, but my parents work in MD Anderson so I can get some connections.

TX medical schools tend to favor TX applicants (same with any other state..CA, NY, etc) so being In-state can be favorable. There are a BUNCH (8 if you count DO) of med. schools in TX, including Baylor which is practically next door to Rice.

^Nvm, i messed up on the acceptance rate part. And the Duke tuition is $48k

^^ I think that's total COA, not just tuition (which should be in the 30-40k range).

Both have excellent medical programs, as has been established. So pick on personal preferences (size, weather--although let me tell you, NC has some nasty weather as well, about 100 today--location, residential colleges/not, etc). You seem to personally lean towards Duke.

Yeah you're right kyledavid, Rice tuition is about $30k, Duke is about $36k

if you get into rice/baylor, you CANT go anywhere else. I mean you could, but why would you? And the part about Texas applicants gettin favored in Texas med schools is true. Durham weather isnt as bad as Houston, but its still very humid, just not quite as hot.

westsidewolf, can you show me where you saw rice's 90% med school acceptance rate? Also, do you know if rice discourages med school applicants if they have a minimal chance of getting in? That would skew the acceptance rate.

a lot of people at my school got into rice this year (i think 7 or 8), and I know 6 more people got in from a nearby school as well. I think rice does accept a lot of Houston area applicants.

Please don't make this choice based on relative med school admit rates. Both are located very close to world class medical institutions and both do an excellent job of getting their students into successful post-graduate positions, whether it be in the real world or in graduate school. As others have noted, these are perhaps the two finest colleges located in the South/Southwest and making this choice based on anything other than personal fit would be a mistake.

so did you ever decide which school you're applying ED to?

and what high school do you go to btw?
do you go to a klein school?
