Duke or UCLA

I'm trying to choose between Duke university or UCLA. The thing is that I want to go into medicine and I know that the GPA counts for a lot in the medical school admissions process. I heard it was very difficult to get mostly A s in Duke, that you basically have to study until 4 in the morning every day. Should I go to UCLA thinking it is much easier for me to get a high GPA, or is getting an A not as difficult in Duke as I am imagining. Also, would any of Duke's reputation or pre-med programs help mediate the possibly of a lower GPA in the medical school admissions process?

Thanks!

UCLA and Duke will probably yield about the same GPA. UCLA’s mean gpa is lower, but the competition is slightly easier compared to Duke, so it’s a push.

However, undergrad pre-med advising (I have read numerous times) is top notch at Duke, and not so at UCLA.

Advantage – Duke.

What is so special about “pre-med” advising? Wouldn’t a chemistry major at Duke receive the same quality advising as a pre-med student?

GoBlue81 – no, pre-med advising is a specialty consulting service that some schools do well, others not as well, some not at all.

Hope that helps :)

I’m admittedly biased, but I’d definitely take Duke. Why? The research is seriously happening there, and students have a ton of opportunity to jump in.

At any major research university you are bound to have competition. At UCLA, I imagine in the pre-reqs for medical school competition will be just as tough as Duke if not more. When you’re dealing with large schools, often time grading can be based on a curve or subjectively by TAs-(my experience at UCLA).
