My daughter got accepted into both DUKE and UNC.

We need to pay about $45,000/year for Duke and about half of that for UNC(in state). I know my D likes Duke better. She is going to attend medical school after undergraduate. The cost is a big issue for us. Maybe we can afford Duke for 4 years, but considering the cost of medical school, .......

What would you do if you were in my situation? Thanks.

If she chooses UNC, would you agree to hang on the extra money you would have paid for Duke and let her have it to pay for a portion of her medical school costs later?

If you can offer her this, you would be greatly decreasing the amount of money she would need to borrow for medical school. That might make UNC very appealing to her.

Of course, not all families can do what I’m suggesting. But if you can, you would be creating a win-win situation that might please everyone.

As a NC resident with kiddos here, the in-state tuition can’t be beat. I also have a son here in NC in medical school. Not only is there a large difference in tuition between UNC and Duke for undergrad, the med school tuition discrepancies are even larger.

Med schools want GPA, MCAT and ECs (shadowing time as well.) Where will she perform better?

If she wants Duke and will really shine then Duke it is. If she will be just as a happy at Carolina then you will be saving over $110,000 to help pay for med schools.

If she is willing to accept that additional $110K debt at the med school level than she has her decision.

But she has to get accepted to med school first!!

I second what kat said - you have no idea if she is going to attend med school after undergrad. Med schools will decide that for her down the road IF she decides to apply. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer/pessimist - just pointing out that there’s nothing like college to give everybody a big reality check. I’m saying that in the nicest way possible. : -)

I graduated from UNC last year, so you know which school I’m pulling for… ha! But in my opinion, no undergrad school is worth 45k a year. Save your money while you can for what might come down the road - UNC is a great school and an even better deal.

She’s also more likely to be a star at UNC, and hence may get better mentoring, more research opportunities, more internships, etc., than if she is a middling student at Duke.

Both good choices. But $110k buys a lot of education.
