Anyone with information or experience with Duke Fuqua Masters in Business Foundation 10 month program which costs about $82,000 for tuition, fees, room & board ?
Brown University just announced that they are dropping their SAT/ACT essay requirement. See https://news.brown.edu/articles/2018/07/essay That means that all the ivy league schools have now dropped the requirement. And Stanford dropped it last week. Will Duke?
Hey Duke parents! My daughter wants to apply to Duke ED and So I am asking, what do you think of Duke and the experience your child is having (or has had) there? Are you glad they are at Duke? Are they happy and thriving?
I recently watched a video by the Dean of Admissions who mentioned Duke parents specifically, saying they are generally very happy about the Duke experience. Usually parents arenât mentioned by admissions offices much, so it made me curious what kinds of experiences this group was having.
I saw that nobody has answered, so I figured Iâd give it a shot.
Daughter is a member of the Class of 2022 and Iâd say that sheâs VERY pleased with her experience and choice of college. She was an athletic recruit and had a choice between Duke, another D1 school, and a non-HYP Ivy. We recently spoke to her and it was clear to both my wife and I how much she loves the school, friends, teammates, the ECs sheâs involved with, and classes (mostly!).
One thing that I find interesting about Duke is that it offers much of the rigor and prestige of the Ivies (arguably more than some of the non-HYP schools) BUT also the school spirit of a major conference powerhouse AND the network of a large state university. And the campus! Durham has it charms as well. Drop off was well done and the communication from the schoolâŠwhether via email or the dedicated âClass of XXXX Parentsâ groups are great.
I do get the feeling that it is a work hard-play hard environmentâŠif that matters to you/your kid. Feel free to PM or ask any specific questions you might have.
@piedmontdiner so glad to hear that your D is enjoying her college experience! Our family has had a chance to visit Duke twice now. The last tour guide was wonderfully talkative and honestâŠthe sort of person you could just ask anything. D also had a chance to talk to a number of students at random.
There is so much talk in the news these days of stressed college kids that seem to feel the need to portray everything as effortless and perfect, I wondered how prevalent that was at Duke. I went to a well regarded, spirited school like Duke back in the day, and though we worked hard, it was a happy time not filled with too much stress (well, except perhaps at finals!).
Dâs high school really piles on the work, and it does seem as if a lot of high schools are like that these days, but the kids in her class are collaborative and supportive with each other and no one is pretending it is easypeasy.
From my daughter in response to your question about how prevalent âthe need to portray everything as effortless and perfectâ is at Duke:
âIâd say itâs prevalent but Duke really tries to combat it. If youâre struggling thereâs a lot of support but you have to be the one to reach out. I feel like itâs mainly kids putting that pressure on themselves though â itâs not necessarily a Duke-engendered mindset.â
@24daffodils - My daughter is a junior at Duke in engineering. She loves Duke and is thriving. I agree with @piedmontdiner; Duke is a work hard-play hard environment. I canât imagine a more perfect fit for my daughter.
Thank you for the responses! It is great to hear from actual Duke parents, it is very reassuring. Now to see if D gets accepted in a few weeks!
Just to say that D did indeed get accepted to Dukeâs class of 2023. So happy to join Duke parents!
lovely! I canât believe I am still hearing from this thread! my son graduated in 09. He bleeds Duke Blue to this day. Was in the Symphony, took a semester abroad, and has kept up with his class post graduation. Weddings and babies have commenced for his peer groupâŠgraduate school is behind them.
Wonderful, Failne2! I remember your username from years past! What is your son up to these days?
Hi 24daffodills. He worked in business (altho graduating in spring 2009 after the October 2008 crash was a big dampener). Then kept his job and got an MBA in night school. Still flying around to meetup with Duke classmates although they are 32 now and have busier lives and more commitments.
I am hearing there is a lot of demand for the HYP and Columbia kids. Many get drafted by top notch companies after their junior year internships. Howâs Duke in that regard? After all, finding a great job is one of the biggest reasons they go to college for!
I thought I would revive this thread in case any other Duke parents would like to discuss issues, concerns, interesting tip bits, etc.
Anyone going to the âEarly Decision Blue Devil Dayâ in January? Iâm really impressed so far with the communication from the administration of what to expect the next 8 months before the 2024 class enrolls (e.g. the summer Duke Alumni Association send-off party in our region).
Anyone else?
@socaldad2002 I will be at ED Blue Devil Day with my son. It will be my first time at the college since my son went with his dad for the tour. I am pretty excited about it.
Thatâs great! The one thing that I noticed touring Duke versus numerous other college tours we went on was you felt like you were at a world-class institution of higher learning the second you stepped on campus and even the student body you talked with were very smart and articulate about what they were studying and career plans.
My D and wife are going this time. The one thing that D was concerned about is the assigned roommate and having to live with a complete stranger. I told her she will be fine and itâs only for freshman year.
What is your son studying and what part of the country you from?
My S and his dad kept telling me how beautiful it was, I am sure I will like it, just canât wait to see it for myself. He is studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, we are in NC, about 2 hours away from Duke.
From our experience they do a pretty good job of matching you with a roommate that has the same habits as you do. Although my daughter and her roommate did not decide to room together this year, they did co-habitate wonderfully together. Everything that we have experienced at Duke so far has been top notch, from academic accommodations when she had a concussion over finals last winter, to when she had the flu the following semester. Food is top notch and she was able to fully immerse herself into everything Duke. That includes living in a tent for 4 weeks last winter. She is currently thriving and looking forward to taking a class Summer Session 1 and do Duke in Costa Rica for Summer Session 2 this upcoming summer. I would be glad to answer any questions you may have.
@hopewhite25 thanks for the information. D is a public policy major but might also be interested in doing the Markets & Management Studies certificate. Do you have any insight on that program?
