Duke/Penn

I graduated with a BA from Harvard many moons ago, then a PhD from Penn. I taught at Duke, and my husband received his BA from Duke before he went to Penn Med. I love all three schools. I do want to address the Penn/Penn State thing, though. When I was in college and someone asked me where I was a student, they would act like I was rich or snobby or some weird genius when I said I went to Harvard. At Penn, I found it extremely convenient that the kind of people who would hire me knew Penn’s status and reputation–but that strangers I was chatting with with on the bus could still assume I was normal. (Similarly, if you’re in North Carolina chatting with random folks at the gas station, saying you’re a Duke student might not go over as well as saying you go to State.)

I think this whole conversation has gotten really pointless and stupid, but His TyNess couldn’t be more incorrect by saying that its way easier to get a job at Penn than Duke.

^ Yes, he was being absurd. Pay no heed to it.

^Thanks for the perspective. They call bringing up that you go to Harvard in conversations as “dropping the H bomb” these days. Or, at least, they did like five years ago…
