Just out of curiosity, what is the guy to girl ratio at strictly the Pratt School? Is there even an significant different and if so, are you able to tell while sitting in class? Also, are their gender difference based on each engineering division? I know that civil/mechanical tends to be more popular with guys while BME may have a more even gender interest. Answers from students with personal experience would be helpful. Thank you!

I think Pratt is about ~30% girls…which is not bad. And I can definitely tell in class that most of the people are guys, but I’m not too sure about the gender division in each department.

Like many engineering schools, obviously there will be many more males than females. That’s why applicants who are female, get a boost when applying to engineering schools.

I believe BME is about 40% female, while ECE/ME are less than 25%. Don’t know about CE. If you’re female and in BME courses, though, they’ll be plenty of female company. But clearly due to the numbers, you get a slight boost applying as a female to Pratt. Since Duke is 50/50 overall, Trinity has more female students than males, but obviously not enough of a difference to notice…

Thank you guys! I was just asking out of curiosity, since I am very much aware of the gender disparity at my state flagship (it’s an engineering school)! Personally, I’m interested in studying BME or mechanical engineering at this moment, but we’ll see when I actually start my engineering courses in college. I really hope I receive good news from Duke in three days. :)

Is civil engineering a popular major at Duke? I heard that over 50% of Pratt is BME students. Do you think I have slight advantage since I applied to Pratt ED for civil engineering since the schools is not very known for that major? I know they take your intended major into consideration even though you can always switch.

Good luck to you, skittlescutie.
