Duke Preppy?

Is Duke really as "preppy" as some people make it sound? I mean, I don't have a huge problem with it, I just want students who are down to earth, easy to talk to and bright. Would Duke fall under this category? Thanks.

I’m interested in the same thing. I’ve heard that duke is very preppy, then again I heard the same thing about Auburn and the number of saggy-pants-wearers there was alarming. Haha

Preppy people exist just like they do at many colleges, but plenty of people wear jeans, hoodies, and t-shirts. It helps that Duke gives out so many free shirts anyway, might as well put them to use :)

It depends on what your definition of “preppy” is. I personal found it to be associated with a style of dress and attitude, but not with any sort of negative connotation involved. I found almost all students, even the “preppiest,” here to be very down-to-earth and casual in ways that may surprise you.

Advice: Try not to stereotype. Some people here may look “preppy” or very Sorority Girl or Frat Boy, but many of them will surprise in their intelligence, insight, and kindness. (One of the sweetest girls I’ve met at Duke initially came off to me as a California Sorority Beach Bunny, but ended up being one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.) Give everyone a chance. :)
