Duke Rape Cases... changing anyone's mind?

I'm really just fed up with the idea that our HBCUs financial aid is so bad that students are doing double-time jobs like stripping, that the sad part about this.

Yeah, and making up rape cases to get even more money...

She was an unwed mother though with a child to support (she may even have had 2), if I recall correctly, so she probably had more expenses than your average student, to be fair. Ugh, teen pregnancy. It's just a lose-lose situation no matter how you spin it. Abortion sucks, adoption sucks, keeping it sucks and is expensive and difficult. :(

semiserious's response reminded me of an important detail....the guys accused are not from the South. They are from wealthy, Northern families. so, if we must reconsider going to a Southern school because of the Duke scandal...must we as well reconsider talking to Northern males... because my God, they are all a bunch of racist rapists! All females are at risk!!!

note: i don't want to offend anyone..so if I didn't make it obvious..this message is completely tounge-in-cheek. I have no problem with Northerners. The fact that the accused Duke players are from the North is as trivial as the fact that Duke is located in North Carolina.

In the UAE, I know of 11 who applied to Michigan who also applied to Duke. Three of those students had Duke as their definite first choice. All three of them got into Duke. However, by the time they were accepted, they opted to go to their second choice schools, which were Brown, Penn and Wellesley. The change of heart was definitely because of the rape cases.

must suck for those guys to be that misinformed out in the UAE.

"The change of heart was definitely because of the rape cases."

You mean because of the media hype (apparently national and international) associated with the "alleged" incident? It has not been proven that the "rape cases" are anything more than a fabrication at this point in time. Do they not believe in the concept of "innocent until proven guilty" in the UAE??

Do you know these three personally? What about the other eight (out of 11)?

Duke seems to be swarming with dbags lol

Yes, I know them. Of the other 8, only 4 got in, all of them picked stronger Engineering programs (2 picked Michigan, 1 chose Cal and 1 chose Cornell).

Pirt, what shocked the students was the way the university handled the matter.

how should the university have handled it? what should have been done differently?

yeah the university did a pretty good job...lacrosse team was basically dismantled, and the university heads reacted right away, they didn't distance themselves from it at all

"I had predicted a drop in the yield (doesn't take a genius to) which is why I think its rank on USNews will drop and so will indirectly harm Duke (USNews is very influential)."

I think USNews dropped yield as a factor in its rankings a few years ago.

Oops Sorry my fault. Though I still think Duke's rank will drop on USNews.

Based on what? Your belief?

Yeah its just my prediction. Based on nothing but a guess. I don't believe Duke's standard has fallen I just predict that its USNews Rank will drop. no more no less.

I think Duke was far overrated in the 2005 edition and I hope USnews corrects that this time around...

^^^^^ agreed.

are the boys even guilty? there are rape casses at almost every school i would imagine so i wouldnt judge duke by this case. also, i wouldnt take duke off my list because what those boys did doesnt represent everyone at the school.

"i wouldnt take duke off my list because what those boys did doesnt represent everyone at the school"

i agree. I'd take Duke off my list because of the RollingStone article that looked at the social stratosphere of the university.

gomestar, are you serious? you quoted that the actions of a few should not be applied to all, but yet you're allowing the statements of a couple of sorority girls to define an entire social scene? does anyone else see the fallacy of that?

If we're stereotyping, should we talk about the no-fun, cutthroat Cornell, gomestar? ;)

I agree that Duke will probably drop in the rankings. 25% of the US News rankings are based on (the somewhat nebulous) "peer assessment," and it's not hard to see that the "scandal" has hurt Duke's image.
