DUKE! Regular decision! help!

ok guys... my application is all filled out... and ready to go... but like... its sooo expensive to apply to these places... and... i dunno... i don't even know if i'm smart enough to get into this place... and its my first time here so i think i'll just tell you my stats and stuff and you can tell me what you think

SAT 1370 ... 710 in english and a 660 in math

AP .. 5's in English and Calculus AB and a 4 in American History

GPA 4.2 ... weighted

i'm in a gazillion extracurricular activities...band, jazz band, chorus, piano, drama, speech, radio, quizbowl, tutoring, french club, red cross, ... i'm the secretary of Hi-Y... sr class executive committee... ummm i have a bunch of speech trophies and stuff... i do volunteer work over the summer...

i wrote my essay on how i became obsessed with politics this year.... and yeah.. thats all i can think to say for now

please tell me if you think its worth sending in the application!

oops i forgot to mention my SAT 2's

770 in writing
720 in us history
a 550 in math 2... blech... it was all trig and geometry.. the entire time i thought... i can take the derivative!

ur ECs are good...r SAT II IIC isnt...so its prbably 50-50 or something like that

you don't think they'll ignore that test and just look at my calc AP test? which i got a 5 on.... why wouldn't they think... oh its obviously been like YEARS since she had any trig or geometry.... and she seems to know calculus pretty well...... ?

dont sell urself short...some of the top school acceptances ive heard about on these sites as well as for some of the people i know are relaly surprising considering their credentials and essays....i'm doing duke too...you can check my stats on the medill thread for this section...my SATs are high but GPA is low...i guess we kind of mirror one another in that respect...your SATs are mediocre and that 550 should have been retaken but your gpa is great and ur ECs are spectacular. seems like ur essay would be interesting too. email me that essay if you want, and perhaps u can help me with mine too. whats 70 (or around there) bucks in the grand scheme of things anyways?

Of course it's worth sending in the application. Most of the time, it is worth it.

Joey

But to answer your question, no, I don't think they'll ignore that score on the basis that it's been years. Math, unlike history facts, is something you know or don't know. That score tells them you don't have the solid math foundation for college level math and science courses. Sorry, but it disturbs me that so many kids on CC seem to feel colleges will overlook their weaknesses. That is just not likely at highly selective schools that have their pick of kids without something that needs overlooking. I wish high school counselors made this more clear. I know nothing about Duke or its averages, but if you want to know what your chances are you can figure them out better yourself than taking random comments here. Look at all their averages for accepted candidates. If you clearly exceed them all, you have a good chance. If yours are average for last year's acceptees, you will get in if you have fabulous ECs or another hook. And so on.

Duke's middle fifty is 1390-1530, so you're a bit low for that. Also, are your ECs just a laundry list, or do you have any leadership positions/clearly demonstrated active commitment. Without that, all those ECs are going to be practically worthless at a school like Duke.

Also, the 550 in Math IIC just sort of reinforces your Math score on the SAT I. If I were you, I would make a big deal out of the 5 on the AP Calc exam, just so they can see you can handle college-level math.

What's your UW GPA? Weighting systems vary so much, I can't really make a judgment off a 4.2 weighted.

If you are curious about the competition, check out the Duke RD roster in the Duke forum. It's intense, to say the least.

i'm section leader in jazz band, concert band, and marching band... i'm a category coach in speech team... in drama i was sound manager .. and i also perform in most of the plays.... i always forget to mention some extracurricular or other ... oh yeah.. i'm also in math league ..............

i don't know what my unweighted GPA is... i've never seen it

sigh i'm getting all nervous

please help

From what i've read and in my school, anyone can join any clubs they want. So ur EC's are like a "laundry list" sure. I think to get any recognition you should have any sort of award, or 1st place, or at least statewide attention.
but wait this is duke?

Sorry to interrupt I was just wondering. Are you filling an online appplication? Coz I was filling an online one and tried REALLY hard and goofed everything trying to fill the form before the clock on my PC showed 12:00 at night. I just thought it sorta showed in their technological stuff or smg( not good at it). And finally sent mine at 12:15. Do you guyz think it's ok and they'll still accept it? PLZ TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!

i have statewide attention... i went to governor's honors academy... i'm an AP scholar... i got 2nd place at a state speech tournament... i've won like gazillions of county contests for random things ....................... i have a different practice every fricken day... i don't get home until after its dark ... during play season... wayyyyyyyyy after its dark.... once i calculated it out... and i spent more time at school than at home.. and that includes the time i spend sleeping :)

so is the general opinion that i can't get into duke?

good luck then!

does anyone know wut RSI is? i saw it mentioned in one of the threads along the words research, etc.

i have a confession to make..... i'm already in duke.... i got in early decision... a friend of mine.. a fellow acceptee.... was told on this site that he couldn't get into duke.. so we thought it'd be interesting to see what my evaluation would be...... not a very positive one i noticed......

(sighs). you were not filling out your application just before the deadline, then... Well, I'm SOOO ALONE^) it's a funny thing you thoght to play on those forum people. they sorta didnt give me a very bright evaluation either. we'll see^)

oh keep your head up boy... i think we've established that most of the people on this site are full of nonsense .... so just ignore what people say and be happy.. and good luck with whatever college you sent in 15 minutes late!!! gasp ........ right... so yeah... good luck tootsie pop!

THNX!! It was Duke, by the way. And Harvard...I'm a real tootsie pop to have goofed it so much:)
