Duke students to protest fraternity’s ‘racist rager’

Consolation,

But that rule would not stop a fraternity having a party offensive to women. :(

@poet
I didn’t say expel them. That would never occur. Just disband the frat. When I say “teachable” I mean, like, sensitivity training or something.

@pizza
I just reeeeeeaaaalllllyyyyy don’t like them.

I think this is a really good point.

Cardinal: I have daughters and not sons, and I really think the first step to stopping those parties offensive to women is for women to stop attending.

ETA: in fact, I think if women stopped attending those parties, they would die out in about 3 seconds flat.

Can I have this bronzed? :D

This is precisely what I mean about the empowerment of women that I’m always on about.

@poetgrl That chant never happened at the NC State game last night. Do some more reading up on it. I know someone who was sitting 4 rows up at center court in the student section. The chant was “Past Your Bedtime”…but by all means keep piling on. Amazing how one idiot with a blog can put something like that out there and intelligent people can just run with it. What a joke!!! The times we live in…

No, that’s what’s being said. There is a recording and I was watching the game.

I’ll see if I can find the recording. Again, the whole media thing is going to sink you on this one.

Don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself:

[Duke fans chant about NC State player’s dead grandma?](http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/breaking/Duke-fans-chant-about-NC-State-players-dead-grandma.html)

Look, I really don’t care about Duke. But, if I had a kid at Duke or was a kid at Duke, I wouldn’t be so busy defending as trying to figure it out. I understand the desire to defend, but it doesn’t serve the kids. But, you can disagree. If you think there’s more sensitivity on that campus than I do? I’m good with that.

[Y! SPORTS](<a href=“Did Duke fans cross the line with an insensitive chant toward N.C. State player?”>Did Duke fans cross the line with an insensitive chant toward N.C. State player?)

Decide for yourself…the Duke cheerleaders held up the “past your bedtime” sign and this is what happened…but whatever you want to believe!!

I watched the game as well.

I’m not defending anything…it just didn’t happen. But people can be believe whatever they want and I’m fine with that!!

I did listen for myself, and don’t find the video dispositive either way; you can’t tell. From what the various observers said in the linked articles, probably most people were chanting “Past your bedtime” but a few insensitive louts yelled “How’s your Grandma?”

There are a few insensitive louts everywhere.

this is so true.

Totally agree there are a few insensitive louts everywhere. This was being portrayed as a chant by the student section and it just didn’t happen.

I agree with Cardinal Fang. The chanting about Lewis’ grandmother was clearly not widespread, but it is perfectly believable that a few idiots were saying it. I don’t see why Tyler Lewis would lie about something like that.

Regardless of whether the chanting really happened or was pervasive in the arena, the fact that these two issues have been brought up is making the students at Duke look REALLY bad. I know that most Duke students are fine individuals that would never condone such things. But you must understand, these stories are making the student body as a whole look just awful.

I understand how this looks, and I am not defending any of the actions of anyone. I especially have no issues with how the frat party was covered in the media. They are getting everything they deserve. I do agree with Warblers that similar incidents did not receive the same level of discussion here, but it is what it is.

This “chant” at the basketball game was reported inaccurately and unfairly. I also don’t doubt that a few idiots yelled “How’s Your Granda”,as was said you can find a few idiots everywhere, especially at a college basketball game.

I’m going on the record as saying there are a few idiots everywhere. I’m not a fan of any of the incidents at any of the universities, and I think that students at all universities will exert peer pressure based on the values held within the larger community.

some of it is self-selection, but college age kids are open to new ideas. Show them their behavior is racist and a large majority of them will change, imho. But, I think this is up to the student community. to bring the pressure.

warblersrule – I hope that you don’t stop posting on CC. You are kind, thorough, helpful, and fair. I always like to read your posts because they are thoughtful and well-written. If you continue to post, and if people know of your Duke connection, that can only help the image of the university.

You are also very open about being gay, and your graciousness may help to chip away at the prejudices of any less than affirming CC readers – although I’d like to think that there aren’t many of them.

fraternities are not generally known for having classy parties… but they are definitely known for having theme parties. I would be interested if someone could list some classy themes that fraternities have for their parties (their open parties, not like date night parties)

overall I don’t see why this is surprising.

I’d say it’s because they are a basketball powerhouse and therefore they are in “conflict” more often with the schools most people identify with – that is, the state U.
I think Duke’s reputation for preppiness/snobbiness was really cemented with their Christian Laettner-led championship team and their contrast with UNLV and Michigan’s Fab 5. You can’t look any more preppy than Laettner.

I think their arrogant reputation is overrated, though. Is the Duke student body more arrogant than the Harvard student body? Not in my experience.

No, it’s where false claims were made that resulted in the disbarring of the prosecutor who fostered them. Read this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_lacrosse_case</a></p>

You can’t fix stupid but you can fix ignorance.

This type of thing will happen but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored as just another silly thing kids do while in college. Good for the people who stand up and protest, that is the best part of a democracy. There are far too many incidences in history where people stay quiet and “ignorance” breeds like rabbits.

"
Why do you suppose that is? Why do you suppose Duke is more polarizing than most of its academic peers? As with every stereotype, there is a kernel of truth behind it.
I’d say it’s because they are a basketball powerhouse and therefore they are in “conflict” more often with the schools most people identify with – that is, the state U."

ROFL! The reputation extends far beyond North Carolina.
