how is the duke summer program for high school students?

Do you mean TIP? My son is at it right now, his second time there. He really enjoys it, and he doesn't usually like anything that takes him away from his computer.

My son is at TIP now, too. While we haven't heard from him yet this term, he loved it last year, so we're hopeful that it will be at least as good as it was last summer. His sister attended for three years and loved all three of her summers there. We highly recommend it. I will say that I think part of what made it a positive experience is that they went with an interest in studying something they'd never find in high school, and not with an aim to advance one more year in math or something. I'm not sure they would have enjoyed it quite as much if they were just going to fulfill a course in a math sequence, although the social aspect would have been equally good.

TIP is reat program...they also have another one that im not sure what its called...but if you want to do science its like an internship for research. TAP at UNC is a program comprable to the Duke one, and if admitted into TAP your chances of Not being admitted to UNC are slim to none.

Excuse me....but what is TIP? TAP?

You can read about Duke's Talent Identification Program (TIP) here: http://www.tip.duke.edu/ It offers a number of services, including summer programs and e-learning programs.

Both of my children have the summer programs, and both absolutely loved them. I know some people -- both parents and kids -- balk at the idea of sitting in a classroom for three weeks over the summer, and my children did hesitate a bit before the first summers. After attending, however, they both cite the experience as one of the best they've ever had, both academically and socially - and they are both kids with very active social lives at home.

Another fun thing about the TIP experience for my daughter is that when she heads off to college in a few weeks, she will already know several students who'll be there with her, because they attended TIP with her. It really seemed to foster a network of friends around the country, which is another big plus, I think.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

nceph - Thanks for the info and the link. :) :)

My son attended Duke Tip last summer and is going again this summer. Do you think attending Duke tip would have some advantages to applying for Duke University? Duke says no. but just wondering....

Duke University Summer Session

Duke University Summer Session

is something different from Duke TIP.

I went to Duke TIP last year and absolutely loved it! I recommend it to any student wishing to stick his/her feet into the academic summer program pool. It's educational enough so that student's will feel like they learned something, but not so intense that he/she could fall behind.

It's absolutely incredible. I went last year as well-- it was literally the happiest time of my life. I'm going back for my final term in two weeks and cannot wait to see my friends again. It's changed my life.

Duke TIP is a hella awesome experience. My 4th year sucked, a lot, but my first 3 years were the greatest times of my life! And I went to each one practically free, the financial aid is great.

How hard is it to get into?

Thanks tokenadult for the Duke summer session link! :) Is the Duke summer session selective? Sorry, I know this is a TIP thread :D

I'm confused- Is the Duke Summer Session for high schoolers? It says 'for graduated high school students'. Or am I misreading something?

^ I just noticed that a half-an-hour ago.
