Duke TIP Summer 2013

My daughter will be participating in one of the summer programs Duke offer, and I was wondering how many others who visit the forum often have a sibling or a child who will be at Duke.
My daughter will be in North caroline, second session taking Algebra II, anyone else?

Just spoke about this with one of our kids. He is waitlisted for a writing class at TIP (at the Duke campus, session 2). He has done a lot of TIP weekends there and has loved it. In the meantime, he accepted a spot at another non-TIP writing program at Duke.

We have heard nothing but good things about the TIP summer program (well, except for complaints about the cost!!!). I am sure your daughter will enjoy it!

Thank you for your message.I don’t know anyone who has been at Duke TIP, and even though I think it is a great experience, it is always good to hear it from someone who has the experience.
My daughter is very excited. She knows the program is very intense, but she thinks she is going to enjoy it.
Thanks!

I went to TIP for three summers and LOVED it. Also, just a note, I wouldn’t really describe the overall experience as “intense.” The courses are challenging, but the teachers are relaxed and work is limited to class times. Homework/studying does not exist and we are encouraged to relax and take advantage of the social activities, which are awesome. The class structure of Algebra II will be slightly different from most classes, which are less focused and more about intellectual exploration, but your daughter will still benefit from the generally open/noncompetitive academic environment. She will probably have an awesome time and want to take other interesting TIP courses in future summers. I am genuinely jealous that she is just beginning her TIP experience.

Also, a great source of information is the Tipwiki, run by Tipsters with pages about more than you could ever want to know. It’s also quite entertaining. Tipwiki

Great! Thank you for the info, coming from a former Duke TIP student it is very valuable.

I’ve attended Duke TIP 3 years in a row (this will be my 4th and last) and it really is a great experience. It’s not too stressful; as the other poster said, there isn’t homework and there are recreational activities as well as free time and classes. But you do learn a lot in ~7 hours a day of class (less on Saturday and none on Sunday) and it’s full of brilliant kids.

This year, I’m doing Literary License Without Limits (a writing course) at Duke East campus, term 2.

I am glad to hear your feedback from the point of view of a student. My daughter will be going for the first time this year, and I hope that she falls in love with it. She is in 8th grade, and will be doing Algebra II.
I will also be going to Duke East as a teacher assistant, (far away from my daughter, because she would not be happy if I go too close) and I am also excited.

Thank you, and have fun!!!

Hello,

My daughter will be attending the Algebra 2/Session 2 in July. She is in 7th grade and excited to attend the course. I wonder if they will be in class together or if there are multiple courses running at the same time? Which campus will you be at: WFU or Davidson?

My daughter will be at WFU. Which campus is your daughter going to? Do you think Duke TIP may have more than one Algebra class per campus? I doubt it.
She is excited but nervous… of course she doesn’t know anyone going. Besides, we know live in Venezuela, and none of her friends in Venezuela are doing anything similar.
It would be nice if they are going to the same campus that they get in touch, what do you think?

Just to chime in, my son is at Duke East right now taking Algebra II. He’s seven days into the program.

He says it’s fun and not too hard. I was worried it might be too intense. I suspect it will get harder now that everyone is ramped up. My son also says the teachers explain two or three different ways to do every type of problem. In the past one of my son’s teachers has wanted everyone to work the problem “her” way.

FWIW, he won’t get high school credit for completing the program. But he likely will go into trig in ninth grade providing his end of course evaluation is okay.

My daughter is at Wake Forest right now and is having the time of her life! She says she wants to come back every year… thank you for your replies…

TIP is absolutely FANTASTIC. I went all four years I could, and this summer I just completed my last term. Your child will make friends for a LIFETIME. It’s not really an intense program academically, but it is a great social experience. The RCs are extremely nice and concerned with your well being. TIP is an extremely censored camp in terms of what’s acceptable (no racial jokes, no cussing, ect ect. Censored to the point were my RAG couldn’t do “burning up” by the Jonas Brothers for our TIPsync, so if your worried about your child being exposed to things that aren’t appropriate, it won’t happen at TIP).
Anyway, West is best, hands down. East is great but the atmosphere of West is amazing (in my opinion. Easties would disagree with me vehemently)

Thank you for your reply. My daughter is having a blast, and I am so happy we decided to send her. I hope we can do it every year after this one. She is actually at Wake Forest, but I am a TA at Duke west campus. I have not been at east campus, but this is just, as you said, a fantastic atmosphere to spend a summer.
Thank you!
