Duke TIP

Has anyone participated in Duke TIP's program in high school...if so, what were you evaluated on or how did they evaluate you?

Btw, is anyone doing the Tropical Medicine program in Costa Rica? :]

I did Duke TIP back in 7th grade. I lost the booklet that had all the summer programs though. Actually, I trashed it as soon as I got it because I was living in the middle of the ghetto, and the prices were very very steep.

Do they still accept sign-ups for programs? (we're in a better financial situation now :P)

:[...aw that sucks...at least you are in a better situation now...

Well...I think it's too late this year...even I was late when I applied and that was a month ago...you can always try next year though...

Ah, that's too bad, well thanks anyways.

This will be my son's 3rd year at Duke TIP (his last!). What evaluation are you talking about? There is an end of course evaluation, but it is informal (unless you are taking something like Algebra or Geometry).

There are no grades, but at the end of each term there is a series of questions that your teachers answer about you on a 1-5 scale: for example, "Did the student cooperate in class discussions?" and things of that sort. It's all very informal and I'm not sure I ever got a copy.
(It's all about Duke East. :P)

Well, my counselor was saying that it would be good if I got a good recommendation or evaluation from the program/ teachers...

I think it might be the questions Elanorci (thanks btw) was refering to...

But...that's strange I thought you were supposed to receive a copy or something... :x...so there is no hard copy of any evaluations?

Oh wow your son participated 2 times already? :O....must have been a great program :]...

Yes, my son really likes going to TIP (and Duke West rules!). I know the teachers have a parent conference at the end of the term, either in person or by phone, and I do seem to recall getting a written evaluation like elanorci described.

My son took a math and a science course. For the science course he got a written evaluation and there was a parent conference with the instructor (I was there to pick him up). For the algebra course he got a number grade as well as a detailed evaluation.

He would have gone back another year but he got into our state's Governor's School and chose to do that. He really enjoyed the programs and the other students.

Oohh I see...thanks for your help... Elanorci, Fireflyscout and Over30 :]]

Just to add to this thread. My son did the Tropical Biology program this summer in Costa Rica and absolutely adored it. Great kids, great counselors, beautiful spots to stay, everything.

(Doubt anyone checks this anymore, but just in case it comes up in a thread search)

Duke TIP is really educational for a summer program. Based on your class, you'll probably be graded based on participation, effort on projects, peer interaction, etc., it's pretty laid back though.
