duke transfer

I've heard that transferring to duke is particularly hard and they admit a very low number of students. does anyone have the numbers for transfer rates for the previous years? Also, are there any people out there who were accepted to duke as a transfer student? If so, could you give me some info on your story and stats and what made it happen for you? thank you very much any info would be appreciated.

I don't think this is very helpful, but...

Q.How many students apply to Duke as transfer students?
A.While the number varies each year, we usually get somewhere between 200 and 400 applications for fall transfer admission.

Q.How many transfer students does Duke accept each year?
A.The number of transfers we may accept changes from year to year, but we generally accept enough students to fill between 25 and 50 spaces each fall with undergraduate transfer students.

A total of 25-50 transfer spaces for both the sophomore and junior classes seems very small.

I'm a transfer student for the Fall 2005. They accepted 16 this year. However, I do not know how many have enrolled.

transferbme, could you post your stats if possible? thanks a lot

Let's see...

High school valedictorian
SAT: 1480
College gpa: 4.0
Research in high school and college.

Is that it? I don't know the formal way of posting stats on CC...You're just going to have to ask me questions. Sorry for such a late post.

where did you transfer from? what kind of ec's did you have in college? college GPA? thanks a lot

sorry, missed the college gpa in your post

I transferred from Texas Tech. Last year was my first year in college, but not a freshmen by hours (AP!). The only extracurricular activity I had in college so far is a research program. I did sparse research throughout the year and have continued with it this summer. I did not participate in any sports, social groups, or the Greek system.

sorry, don't quite understand what you mean when you say not a freshman by hours. could you please explain? thanks a lot. also, did you feel that your essays were strong? were you confident in the recommendations that were given for you? thanks a lot, you've been very helpful

Because Tech is a public university, I got a ton of credit at the beginning because of my AP scores. It was my first year in college, but I was classified as a junior by credit hours.

I adjusted my old essays that I used in high school to fit the current situation. Most of the applications had lots of short answer questions, so I answered those as best I could, dedicating each one to have a message, but not cliche.

Because I had only known my professors for one semester, I do not think my recommendations were as personal as they could have been. But, I did my best to participate in class, ask questions, and go to office hours after class. I did my best to make sure that the professor knew my name and my face. Other than that, I gave them a copy of what I had accomplished in high school and found comfort in the fact that the admissions committee understands that the recommendations will be based only on one semester of contact.

transferbme, what did your courseload look like for your first two semesters at texas tech? thanks

Let's see...

Fall --
Biology 1
Multivariable Calc (Calc 3) -- Honors
Physics 2 -- Calc. based
Ethics -- Honors

Spring --
Biology 2
Diff Eq -- Honors
Chem 1
Intro to Psych

thanks a lot. Sorry if this is repetitive, i just really want to gain admission for fall 2006, but what is it that you believe set you apart from others and enabled you to gain admission as a transfer student. I know the competition must be incredible and almost everyone who applies is probably a very astute, so i'm just trying to figure out what sets teh acceptees apart. thank you once again.

I don't know what sets me apart. The whole world of college admissions is very much a dice roll to me. To be honest, I simply took my chances. I actually want to ask them why they chose me...

how intense was the transfer application? Did you spend loads of time working on it? Were there basically the same aspects as a freshman application? thanks a lot

I didn't spend a lot of time on the transfer application. Because so many things were the same as the freshmen application, I simply just rewrote what I had written the year before. There's really no difference. The only big difference is that you have to discuss why you want to transfer. But that is a common question for every transfer application at every other university.
