A high-ranking cardiologist from Duke University Medical Center will be the next dean of the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, UM officials said Friday.
The selection of Dr. Pascal J. Goldschmidt, 51, chairman of Duke's department of medicine, capped a search that began a year ago, when former Dean Dr. John Clarkson announced his retirement.
''I am ecstatic,'' Goldschmidt said Friday.
I love to build. . . . I invite you to look at what we are able to accomplish over the next five or 10 years. Although each step will be reasonable and achievable, when we put them together, it's going to be quite impressive.''
Goldschmidt's appointment comes just eight days after UM officials announced they had raised a billion dollars in a single fundraising drive, an effort spearheaded by the medical school, which accounted for more than $600 million in donations.
UM President Donna Shalala's description of the new dean's role revealed her unabashed ambition for the school.
''This is not a caretaker's job, making it incrementally better,'' she said.
We attracted people who wanted to build a great university medical center.''
In 2004, UM's medical school ranked 43rd in the nation in funding from the National Institutes of Health, a measure Joseph Keyes, senior vice president of the American Association of Medical Colleges, called the ''gold standard'' in gauging schools' research prowess.
Under Goldschmidt, Duke's department of medicine rose to third in the nation in NIH funding among comparable departments.
