I'm attending Duke this year, and I have not yet cultivated a distaste for UNC. In fact, I actually respect the school (solid academics, respectable athletics, and a 60% female student body... what's to dislike?). So out of loyalty to Duke, I ask, why should I hate UNC?

you don’t need to hate UNC, it’s a rivalry.

The vast majority of Duke students do not hate UNC as an academic institution. They realize it is a quality school with top notch programs and the athletic teams also deserve our respect. However, respect and disdain for the athletic team are not mutually exclusive. Once you converse with UNC basketball fans (especially ones that do NOT go to the school, which encompasses 80% of the state), then your dislike towards UNC will grow, don’t worry. On the other hand, Duke students neither respect nor like Maryland or its student body as they act like a bunch of hooligans every game (e.g. gave Carlos Boozer’s mom a concussion by throwing glass bottles at her, riot for no particular reason, scream profanities directed towards players and their families - Duke’s players’ families are told not to go to games at the Comcast Center for safety reasons, have a “hate Duke” week preceding the game, don’t care about their team except for when they play Duke)…It’s a “fun hate” with UNC, though, and makes the rivalry that much more exciting.

Ya from what I’ve heard Duke and UNC students hang out and party together, but when it comes to the sports games they hate eachother (mainly because of the proximity of the schools and the t-shirt fans)

Awesome, sounds like a good clean rivalry.

Another thing that many people don’t consider is that when the game is live on TV, the different shades of blue just seem more aesthetically ‘alarming’ that blue vs. red. That’s probably an odd way of explaining it but there is something in the colors that makes it different. When you see it, along with the atmosphere, you will understand. I won’t talk about the other obvious stuff that will probably be stated after this post.
