Duke- unique situation

Is it true that Duke will overlook a weak academic year? I read this somewhere, but I don't know whether it's fact or fiction.

In my particular circumstance I recieved a 4.1 my freshman year, a 3.2 my sophomore, and a 4.29 my junior year (on a 4.0 scale). I received 5's this year on the AP English, AP US History, and AP Psychology Exam. Next year I will be taking 6 AP classes, and I recieved a 1400 on the critical reading/math portion of the SAT. Unfortunately though, I'm not ranked in the top 10% of my class because of my sophomore year and my cumulitive gpa doesn't reflect the student I am.

So back to the question,
Does Duke overlook poor academic years if the student has a "story" to tell and should I even bother applying to Duke, Unc (out of state), and Uva (in state)?

Fiction…

You never know unless you try, right? But I don’t know where you read this… unless you have a legitimate excuse, Duke doesn’t go, “Hey, which year are we excusing for this kid? And how about this kid?”

well, what happened? What’s the story?

Well are my stats good enough to have a chance at acceptance at uva (in state), and unc?

you might have a decent chance for UVA. UNC is pretty hard to get into for out of state people, but you can definitely try. I mean if you can give a good explanation for falling behind in sophomore year and how you picked it back up, you might have a unique story to tell duke and the other schools. Just saying I slacked won’t help much.
