Duke University and UChicago

Which one is more competitive when it comes to admission? In terms of investment banking or pre-law, which one is more well regarded?

I got into the University of Chicago early-action (Asian male), so would you say that I have a fair shot at Duke for RD?

Yes pretty fair shot. UoChicago and Duke are both on the radar for I-banking. But I have read many places that Duke beats out UoChicago due to its alumni network and connections to banks on wall street in terms of recruiting.

The reasons I’m leaning toward Duke:

I live only a few hours away from Duke.

Hotter girls.

Better parties.

Did I mention it’s close to home?

Not as hard as UChicago.

I feel like not getting in is going to kill me, because I’d rather go there than UChicago.

Both are simply great schools, in terms of sheer academics, UoChicago does win out, so it is just as good if not better. So no need to go crazy if you don’t get into Duke. BTW, why didn’t you apply to Stern or Ross if you wanted I-Banking, I am pretty sure those outrank duke.

Hands down, it came down to financial aid.

Stern and Ross are actually a little bit worse than Duke for IBD and quite a bit worse for Management Consulting jobs.

OP, what do you plan on majoring in?

I’m leaning toward economics, with the intention of pursuing investment banking. Even though UChicago is known for its economics program, it shouldn’t be significantly different from Duke’s at the undergraduate level, right?

Duke has better investment banking connections (at least from what I’ve heard from my alum parents), while UChicago has an academic and theoretical econ program that might be better for someone aiming for grad school. And I think that pretty well speaks to the differences at large between the schools: Duke’s students are more well-rounded and genial, whereas UChicago’s tend to be a little quirkier and more academic. Sounds to me like you’re a better fit for Duke (though of course other factors, like financial aid and acceptances, will come into play).

Hey HYPSdreamer, I suggested you go out of state and have fun ;)
